My 12 week old has just given us the fright of our lives .... He woke at a time which would be early for a feed, but I bf on demand so I changed his nappy etc ready to feed. And he started going completely mental. Which is very unlike him as he's not a yeller. He was holding his body very rigid and started to sound a bit like he was choking. We tried some gripe water which made his choking noises worse and although he was breathing we were getting worried that he wasn't able to clear the problem and it sounded like he was struggling. I called 111 as we were so worried - and quite frankly they were shit. After checking his ethnic origin (I had already said it was for a 12 week old baby and they'd retrieved all his NHS details) I spent 2 mins going through various tick-box questions by which time DS had burped for DH and was starting to calm.
Anyway, they put me through to a clinician who suggested it could be trickle back - when some fluid goes down the wrong tubes - and happens because babies spend so long on their backs. Has anyone else had this? DS doesn't have reflux or colic and usually needs very little winding. He has had a bit of a snuffle but nothing major. We were told to try raising the mattress at the head end to avoid this happening again. It was though like the 111 service needed a chat as the lady then spent 10 minutes telling me I should space feeds out so baby goes longer at night, although I had already explained that he'd been great at nights until the last couple when we think we've hit a growth spurt.
He's now just had a bit of a feed and is fast asleep but we got such a fright and we would obviously like to try and help avoid this again! Advice welcome.
