My son had one at 7 months old, he's now 3 1/2 and I've recently discovered a " groove " in his head near the scar.
Only found it as he had a bump on the top of his head so was checking his out in depth and discovered this.
If you push hard enough it almost feels like a gap between 2 pieces of bone but isn't soft in the muddle if that makes sense?
Not sure I'm making sense at all and no idea what's normal this long on, certainly wasn't given any information about it and google is terrifying me

What's a cranimoty? I've never heard of it, why did DS need this? When did you find the thing that's worrying you?were you given any follow up after his treatment?

Mixedupmind · 06/05/2014 07:33

Hi,
He had it at 7 months for a subdural bleed.
It's where a piece of bone is taken out to stops the bleeding then put back.
I found the thing that's worrying me last week as I've been checking his head constantly after he bumped his head which came up in a rock hard lump and is still there ( week 6 now - saw doctor 3 weeks ago and wasn't concerned about that )

A craniotomy? I'm not being an arse but it may get more hits if people know what it is you're talking about.

Go back to the dr if you're concerned.

strawberrypenguin · 06/05/2014 10:24

Hi mixed my son had a total remodel of his head and his skull is fairly uneven but has been since the surgery as we were told it would be. If this is a new development for your son I can see why it would concern you. Do you still have access to his hospital team? If so I would maybe give them a quick call to put your mind at rest. In my experience GPs don't really know what to do with head surgery cases!

Mixedupmind · 06/05/2014 17:57

Okay, I missed an o.
Obviously wasn't intentional.
No access to the neurosurgeons etc, he was discharged completely 6 months after te surgery.
I can't imagine a GP knowing what's normal after one either but I guess I'll have to start somewhere as its not obvious so may have just missed it but concerned its a complication of some sort

Could the GP refer you back to the surgeon/ cranial team for a check up?
From what you've said about the feel of it, it doesn't sound too odd maybe just where he bone has knitted back together a little unevenly. But I totally understand the worry that goes along with DC and head surgery and if I were in your shoes I would want it checked too!

BlackSwan · 06/05/2014 20:31

Mrsmorton you come across as insensitive and ignorant. Not one but two messages which are unhelpful and rude. A craniotomy is brain surgery, and you should be thankful you have no personal experience which would bring you up to speed. Next time you're stumped by a term you read on the internet, you might find google handy.

Mixedupmind, I really hope you get some answers and that your son is ok.

Mixedupmind · 06/05/2014 21:16

Strawberrypenguin,
My GP is on holiday this week but I think I'll make an
Appt when hes back in, if he doesn't know the answer he will have to refer me to someone who does.
Blackswan,
Thankyou very much for your comment.
It is a shame people behind a screen can sometimes come accross so horrible, spiteful and nasty.
Although who knows that may just be their personality.
A shame though, as I obviously am asking for something regarding a child which is an odd time to be sarcastic especially on a place called " mumsnet "

A friend's DD had a craniotomy and has mentioned skull unevenness since. Hope the gp can put your mind at rest.

Reading this, I don't think mrsmorton meant to be rude - think it may have come across wrong.

Mrsmorton · 06/05/2014 23:22

Ho hum, I was just bumping a thread I knew nothing about for a worried mum. Obvs everyone else was too busy to do this...

I had no idea what a cranimoty was and I'm sure you know the difference between a craniotomy and a craniectomy blackswan and why that small difference in spelling is moderately important. There's no such thing as a cranimoty blackswan and yes, you'd think almost losing an extremely close friend in an RTA whose life was saved by a craniotomy, I'd know what I was talking about wouldn't you Hmm DFOD.

Mixedupmind · 07/05/2014 09:29

Thankyou.
It disnt come across like that but sometimes it hard to tell if someone is being supportive or sarcastic from a screen
I hope your friend recovered well and hasn't had any further complications.
My little boy is only coming up 4 and the trauma of it all has stayed with me so I apologise for my tone.

I thought it was some kind of Scottish pudding.

DocDaneeka · 07/05/2014 09:46

Get hq to edit the title? Might get you a bit more traffic ( and fewer pedants!)

Sorry I know next to nothing about craniotomy, or Scottish puddings for that matter :)

Though I would second the advice to go back to GP and make a fuss for a referral if you are worried.

Mixedupmind · 07/05/2014 10:53

Does anyone know how I change the title? Thanks

tak1ngchances · 07/05/2014 10:55

You can just PM one of the Mumsnet team, or post on Site Stuff, and they will edit it for you

DocDaneeka · 07/05/2014 14:28

Or just click on the report button and ask for it to be changed.

Good luck OP. I hope someone has the answer for you.

Mixedupmind · 08/05/2014 07:56

I've reported it so hopefully it changes soon
My doctor is off sick this week, brilliant.
So will have to wait until next week now as the others have all been pretty useless in the past.

My dh had a craniotomy 10 years ago. Through the skin on his forehead you can very clearly see the gap/line where they took out and then replaced a bone flap. You can even see the outline of the staples holding it in!

Try looking for the Brain Tumour Charity on facebook, I know your son didn't have a bt, they're the experts on craniotomies, lots of people on there with experience of children having this kind of surgery too. Don't dismiss your GP as having no experience of brain surgery either, ours told us there were quite a few of his patients who shared dh's surgeon.

Mixedupmind · 08/05/2014 14:48

Thankyou.
I think I will see my gp next week ( if hes in ) and then move surgeries as its a nightmare getting an appt with the locum

Hello

We've edited the thread title now at the OP's request. We hope you get some info and reassuring news soon.

ProfYaffle · 08/05/2014 16:01

Think it needs amending again! Should be craniotomies!

Mixedupmind · 11/05/2014 13:03

Thought id put an update on here
We ended up in 2 a&es on Friday as no gp in and not likely back for next week
The first pead has ordered bloods and will see me back as an outpatient in a months time once bloods are back
She sent me to my gp for a referral to the neuro team at a different hospital
GP ( not mine never seen her before ) wasn't happy doing that as they can take 2 months and sent me straight to the other hosiptal
2 paeds looked at him there and neither concerned, nothing that signals needing any type of scans etc and told me not to bother with the bloods as they don't deem them necessary
So still confused although glad nobody has seemed that concerned
