Chicken pox and travel

Hi this is my first post and hope I am posting this in the right place. I would really like your thoughts on our dilemma.

We are due to fly to Majorca on 13th May but last Thursday 1st May my dd 4 came out in a Chicken pox. These have slowed down now and are most are starting to crust over. I plan to visit the doctor to get a safe to fly letter on 12th.

My dilemma is.....we have another daughter who is 16 months and as far as I am aware has not had chicken pox (she is adopted). If she has chicken pox from my oldest it may not appear until we are on holiday.

I believe my oldest came into contact with chicken pox at her birthday party on Good Friday which my youngest was also at. My youngest isn't showing any signs of spots but has had a stinking cold for the last week.

I believe we are insured if we can't go because of chicken pox - but if my youngest isn't showing signs of it surely we can't cancel for something that may or may not happen?

With a sister with low immunity I am so aware of avoiding public places.

What would you do?

Yes you're posting in the right place.

I think you should ask your GP's advice about this.

Forgot to add as much as I have tried to prevent cross infection My daughter has coughed over the youngest and I found them sharing a cup. Not that I think there was much I could do to prevent it

Sorry hit post by accident...

Both my twin daughters came down with chicken pox when we were on holiday. Luckily we were staying in a self-catering cottage in France, I speak reasonable French so was able to get the right medicines from the pharmacy, and we were able to keep away from other people. In some ways it was great to be able to let them recover in warm fresh air, both girls were able to wear virtually nothing while the worst of the itchy phase was going on. However, I'm not sure I'd have been happy to have been in an hotel by a beach.

Is there no way you can find out the medical history for your younger dd?

My youngest dc just came out in spots exactly 2 weeks after her older brother did. I'd always heard 10-12 days so thought she wasn't going to get them but she did.

xposted...

It goes without saying that if your younger dd isn't immune, she WILL catch it from her sister!

dtd1 developed her symptoms 5 days after dtd2.

Kitson35 · 04/05/2014 12:07

The records we have don't show chicken pox but there was a short time before she was in care and details are limited on that time. I am guessing she is unlikely to be immune.

Unfortunately this one is a wait and see... I think your 2nd dd will get it, but it may be mild and over by the time to travel. With mine DS1 had it first and had tons and tons of spots - live spots for a full 2 weeks, DS2 came out with it a week later than DS1, got 10 to 15 spots and was fine to go out again after a week.

Kitson35 · 04/05/2014 12:11

Guess I am just clutching at straws but could it be possible she had a mild dose of chicken pox from the party hence the cold symptoms?

A cold is a very common symptom before spots appear
