How long is normal for a fever to last?

Ds (5) has had a high temp (not sure of exact temp as thermometer is broken but hot to touch) since Thursday evening.
On Thursday he complained of a bad tummy but no more complaints since
Brought down the temp with medicine yesterday but even them he was still warmer than usual and lacked energy.
He had medicine before bed last night and slept through but has the high to again this morning, complaining his throat is croaky and his eyes are hurting (migraine?)
Drs won't be open until Tuesday now..do you think it's worth a trip to OOH?

Sorry should add this seems beyond what he usually gets when I'll, normally fever only last a day and then seems to go.
I've given him plenty of fluids, he's eaten a little (yogurts and a bit of cereal yesterday)

My ds (5) has had this for about 6 days. Several children I know have had something similar, either an ongoing temperature or an intermittent one. My ds had tummy pains and little appetite for a few days, though seems to have eased now, and an awful, persistent cough which has kept him up loads in the night. The gp I saw on tues said it was a virus and nothing obvious was causing the symptoms. The cough is still bad but the temp is normal this morning, long may it last!

When he says 'eyes are hurting' is he avoiding/disliking light at all?

Busymumto3dc · 03/05/2014 07:54

I rang ooh because my dd had had temp for five days

They said as long as she's taking fluids and passing urine and her temp goes down with meds not to worry. Take her to the gp if it's gone on more than a week

Sorry for the million typos Blush
iamthedanger yes that sounds very similar to my ds, oh I hope it doesn't last 6 days! I have to go out and get more medicine as it is!
lady no i don't think so, he's watching tv at the moment and had turned the light on in his bedroom this morning...I'm keeping an eye for meningitis symptoms though!

Have a google for the nice guidelines - the one in feverish illness in children and the traffic light for serious illness in children are good. It's not just about the fever but how the child is responding to it.
However those guidelines are not a catch a,& you should always trust your instinct as a parent - if you feel your little one needs to see a doctor, no doctor will turn you away.

With his sore eyes, could he be a little dehydrated?

Sunshineonsea · 03/05/2014 14:01

He's a little better today, bit more energetic after some calpol, I think it may possibly be his ear as he says this is a bit sore inside.
Good point about dehydration, he has been drinking and going to toilet but I'll try and get some extra fluids in today
I think I'll leave the OOH for now as the fever seems to have calmed down now. See how he is for the rest of the day and assess from there I guess
Thank you all for your advice Thanks
Hope your Dc gets better soon busy

Sunshine...the fever didn't need medicating all the time, it seemed to be worse in the evening and he was 'getting on with it', albeit below par and looking like a ghost! For some reason he always seems to get things worse than everyone else so fingers crossed your ds makes a speedy recovery! Smile I'm happy to report that we are eating and temp has stayed down so on the mend I hope! I wouldn't worry unless he is worsening and as previous posters have said he isn't dehydrated and is responding to medication.
