Vomiting for 3.5 years. Help

Dd is 3.5 and when about a week old she started projectile vomiting - I mean like across a room vomiting, 5 or 6 'spurts'. She was otherwise a happy, healthy and chunky baby.

The thing is she's 3.5 now and still vomits regularly and with ferocity.

So she will vomit if:

Upset
Hurt
Slightly gags on something
Doesn't like the taste of something
Drinks say a whole cup of juice
Eats too much
Scared
Has a slight cough
Is asleep and I presume has wind
No apparent reason.

A paed said about 5 months ago it was excessive gag reflex and she'd outgrow it and no to worry. She is not underweight, is very tall, meeting all her milestones and her teeth are fine.

This isn't ok though, we are always in vomit alert and its embarrassing for us and her and I'm sure medically it just cannot be good for her. It also limits her diet because she can't manage things like lettuce or alot of meat that takes much eating because if it even slightly touches her throat / reflex she will bring up everything she's eaten.

They tried gaviscon which made her constipated and omezripole (sp?) which she couldn't keep down.

Anyone any advice?

i think you should ask your Gp for a referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist.

They will be able to rule out things and if its gag reflex them they can diagnose that.

hope you get an answer and help

Thanks twig I think I might give GP a call on Monday, she starts school next year and really want it sorted.

I think that using the start of school as a deadline for getting something sorted is an excellent idea. Because you will need to be able to tell the school what/why this is happening, otherwise they will probably try and apply the "48 hours" rule between bouts of vomiting - which could lead to an awful lot of school time missed.
Good luck.

Thanks. Nursery are quite good at knowing its not contagious sick iyswim? But the school is very very big and busy and people just won't have the time to 'assess' her iyswim

Have you heard of cyclical vomitting syndrome?

306235388 · 02/05/2014 18:30

I've heard of it but don't know much about it and thought it would come and go and also she'd be sick alot for a few days then none?

My friends ds has cvs and its very similar to what you describe. Its rare so underdiagnosed. There is more info available and support groups online. Might be worth looking in to.

No advice but you have my sympathy.
My dd has projectile vomited several times, mainly at around 1 yr old. Linked i think to teething. But she also has soya allergy and that causes crying and like a spit up. (Seems to take about 4 hours.
She seemed to do the projectile just after going to bed, sounding like a cough and all the washing needed, especially when she went to bed and did it again.
So really feel for you.
Have you had allergy testing?
Is it reflux?
