teeth stained by antibiotics??

Hi, dd2 will be three in August. We have always brushed her teeth and for the last few months she's been very compliant with it, so we've let her get on with her toothbrush a bit too independently, maybe. But she has been brushing them morning and night, along with dd1, occasionally with our help.
I feel terrible about this now, as I noticed a few days ago that most of her teeth are stained yellow, especially near the gums! I am mortified that it has come to this without me noticing it, my personal dental hygiene is very good and dd1's teeth are also in really good condition!

About two weeks ago, dd2 finished a two-week course of antibiotics (Amoxicillin). Has anyone ever found that this stuff, taken over so many days, has stained their or their children's teeth?
I may be clutching at straws here, but it would explain the colour of her teeth despite them being brushed twice daily.

Btw, I have made an appointment with our dentist and also gone back to brushing her teeth myself.

Ds3 (7) has some staining on his bottom teeth (adult teeth) which the dentist says is most likely due to him being unwell some time between the age of two and three. The only thing I can think of is that he had chicken pox and then an infection quite close together but he has never really been unwell. There is a name for it but I can't remember what the dentist said he also said it could be genetic so it may be something like this with your dd.

Normally antibiotic staining affects teeth which are developing under the gum line I thought rather than current teeth? But if its yellow because she's not been brushing effectively then that's actually better as it won't be permanent and some good brushing will sort it.

Thank you for replying! I'm now brushing her teeth with all my might, hope for the best and patiently await the dentist appointment.

DS2 had staining that might have been caused by me taking antibiotics when pg. I don't recall doing so. Anyway. 6 of his baby teeth had no enamel and he had to have them out.

Hi JoKat!! I know this post was from a long time ago, but this exact thing is happening to me! My 3 year old has always had pearly white teeth, last week ( as we were reaching the end of the amoxicillin regime) I noticed her teeth have turned brown at the top. I am freaking out!! What ended up happening to y’all?? Thanks so much!!

gorzelwummidge · 15/07/2022 23:22

My 5 year had this a few weeks ago. Taking Amoxicillin for 5 days and soon after noticed his top teeth had bad staining. Thorough brushing brought them back to being white though

Oh, that’s so reassuring!! I am hoping the same will happen! Why did the doctor not warn about this?!

Get her teeth cleaned at the dentist. It could just be plaque
