Why does a child get chronic constipation?

Why does an otherwise healthy child, who eats a good varied diet with plenty of fruit and veg, have chronic constipation?

How can this child have chronic constipation if they are pooing most days? Pooing painlessly.

I am negative for coeliac but have wheat intolerance which causes severe constipation.- my GP suggested that I avoid milk and dairy products too for a while. If I have too much milk/dairy it definitely makes things worse.

Bloody hell I'm angry now!

Turns out ds's teacher told him off for taking too long when she thought he'd only gone for a wee, and since then he has been afraid to poo at school.

Angry

You'd better talk to the teacher. It's a shame that some kids do mess around in the loos, resulting in other kids being pressurised to be quick, or to wait till break - it can cause or exacerbate quite serious problems.

Or maybe send a letter explaining clearly, details of medical history etc - if you can do it by email CC to the HT maybe.
