Side effects of Clenil Modulite inhaler (brown preventer)

Has anyone had experience of side effects of the brown inhaler in their DC? DD (7) started taking the medication last November due to increasing asthma episodes that she was having to take oral steroids and ventilin for (cold/infection trigger only).

Since then we've had increasing issues with anxiety, lethargy and inability to sleep. The anxiety is now at a level that is very limiting and we have had to go down the professional therapy route. I've been looking for any possible triggers for this in all aspects and looked at the inhaler leaflet this week. There is a side effect listed as more common in children that basically describes all the recent changes in DDs behaviour. I recognise that I may be grasping at this as an easy solution so before I go to the GP to discuss it I thought I'd ask if anyone has had similar experiences. I don't know how common such side effects are.

Any experience or advice much appreciated.

My daughter is in Clenil and Salbutamol. She has a really nasty cough during the day and night and has been having more frequent night mares and waking up for long periods. She seems to go absolutely crazy once she's had her Salbutamol like she can't control herself and can become quite violent. Is this normal x

Really interested to know whether anyone came up with a decent alternative... I could have written many of these posts- 5 year old daughter on clenil and salbutamol, anxious, angry, tearful and clingy to me. I'm sure it's related to asthma meds. She took montelukast for a week and the change in her was horrific. We've now upped her brown inhaler and started anti-histamines as an alternative (paediatric respiratory consultant) and her anxiety is increasing. If I stop meds, she has had pneumonia three times in past year, two hospital admissions and countless antibiotics/days off school/feeling rubbish. It's just not fair and I'm not certain who to speak to... For those who haven't already, I have found the Asthma UK nurse helpline to be useful - in fact that may be my next port of call! I would hate to say I'm glad other people are experiencing the same, but proves to me that I'm not going crazy with it. Any tips welcomed.

thelizard, ask your GP about Flixotide.

My six year old was prescribed it last year. No unpleasant side effects and it's been just over a year now. He's on the lowest dose possible, 50 mg, either two or one puffs each day. I also give him a calcium supplement with vitamin D to help him. It has improved his life and mine beyond all doubt. Prior to that it had been hell.

Just had to add this. My son's behaviour changed dramatically on clenil. Rages, night terrors etc. Doc wouldn't believe me. He offered montelukast but that can cause psychiatric issues too so asked for intal. My son has been on intal for years now. There is now a gov doc that warns docs of side effects in some on the clenil inhaler.

hello, this is a very old thread and it’s a long shot. But can anyone provide me an update on their child please? We’ve just started Clenil Modulite 2 puffs twice a day for my 2 year old. His behaviour has changed overnight. I feel like I’ve lost my happy boy. He’s extremely angry and hyperactive. He gets a wheezy, crackly chest in the winter when he gets a cold. Consultant did an X-ray and said he thinks it looks asthmatic. Felt positive leaving the hospital with a plan but this inhaler is awful. Please help.

Hi there, not child related but I came off it. I did it very slowly but it was still horrible, the worst asthma I have ever experienced, it felt like the front of my chest was stapled to the back. I’m now on Salmeterol which is classified as a long acting reliever and feel much better.
