Where to get baby circumcised privately, due to medical reasons.

My GP has advised us to get my 3 month old DS circumcised, due to a deformity with his foreskin which may or May cause him problems when he is older. If there is any chance of it causing him pain and problems when he is older, I would rather get it done now, when he won't remember any of the pain, and he will be able to get over it quickly, rather than waiting to see if it causes him problems, and then getting it done, when it is a much bigger procedure.
My GP says it is not available on the NHS, and the 3 private hospitals near me, in Brighton, don't deal with babies. So my question is does anybody know where we can get it done. Obviously we are looking for the best place, as cost shouldn't be an issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would ask your GP to refer you to a specialist then they can decide if an op is necessary and you wont have to fork out for it.

It's not available on the NHS, as it's not causing him a problem now.

i would get a second opinion! seems crazy that a GP would advise an op and then tell you you can't have it on the NHS...?

I know children who have had NHS circumcisions... you definitely need referring to a specialist to talk it through further

cakeymccakington · 16/04/2014 14:13

even if it isn't causing issues now, if it may in the future then I am sure a GP can refer you on

BoneyBackJefferson · 16/04/2014 14:42

I'm not sure why he has said that the NHS don't fund circumcision, they do in cases where it is medically necessary.

I would go for a second opinion and then try and get a referral.

lilyruin · 16/04/2014 15:02

Because it's not a medical necessity now, but I would rather get it done now, rather than wait to see if it causes a problem later, which it is likely to do. I have a second and even third opinion. They all say the same thing. It is not available under the NHS for my DS circumstances.
I just need help finding somewhere to get it done. Does anybody know please.

You could book a consultation with a paediatric surgeon who does private work.

sonlypuppyfat · 16/04/2014 15:06

My DS was circumcised when he was 6 for medical reasons it was done on the NHS if he needs it doing the gp wouldn't leave you to search for a hospital.

cakeymccakington · 16/04/2014 15:10

i'd have thought the GP could tell you where it is available privately? not sure

HolidayCriminal · 16/04/2014 15:17

Your googling is as good as ours, OP. Or talk to Jewish/Muslim faith leaders. Maybe one of them can help.

I would wait & see whether it caused problems. Worth seeing if that might avoid all possible stress.

Try the Portland Hospital in London.

My son was circumcised for medical reasons on the NHS too. If it's going to cause him problems your GP should be referring him.

The suggestion of asking in the local mosques and synagogues is a good one. I just googled Brighton mosque and Brighton synagogue, 3 results came up, the synagogue website seemed more active than the mosques. Most rabbis are well trained in the procedure, but also nowadays most ppl go to hospital consultants who run their own outreach clinics privately. Most use the plastibell method I believe it's called which uses a similar principle to cutting an umbilical cord, and anaesthesia is used. It shouldn't cost more than about £150 to get done privately by a hospital consultant and sometimes they do home visits for the procedure.
