What "counts" as diarrhea? (TMI warning)

Blankiefan · 12/04/2014 19:21

DD is 5.5 months and 3 days ago, started vomiting and having diarrhea. She's also been kind enough to pass it to me but that's another story (although as a first time mum nursing a sick baby whilst having v&d myself, I'll take all the sympathy I can get!)

anyway, I know she needs 48 hours free of either to go back to nursery. Shes definitely getting over things but I don't think her nappies will suddenly go back to usual. Here's the TMI - they're not full of runny poo like they were at the height of things but we get lots per day (maybe 10) with a smear of pale yellow poo (not much but often).,,so - do these "count" when I'm deciding when to send her back to nursery?

TIA

Yes , they count unfortunately. Wait till back to normal.

Need to avoid dairy , bugs thrive on dairy and last longer.

Although she may seem fine she will be infectious. Poor things, hope you all get well soon

Avoiding dairy's a but of an issue as she's not started solids yet! (ff)

Thanks for the advice...

diarrhoea is normally watery and smelly so it sounds like she is on the mend. I dont think a 5.5month old would be having dairy anyway!

ilovepowerhoop · 12/04/2014 19:31

formula is fine to give during D&V as the NHS says to continue with normal milk feeds whether breast or bottle fed. (I dont even think it says to avoid dairy either)

mousmous · 12/04/2014 19:35

if they are not smelling of diarrhoea it would be fine.
but beware it can take a while. dc had it at a simikar age and it took two weeks to get normal again.

Blankiefan · 12/04/2014 20:21

Noooo. I go back to work a week on Wednesday ... She was so nicely settled into nursery. A 2 week break would be terrible (and I'll weep if I feel rubbish for the remainder of my mat leave ....)

I wasn't sure re ages and dairy my youngest is 5 , so was on solids earlier( as per the guidelines then)

However I still think she will be infectious till her stools are normal.

Maybe ask nursery, they may be happy, or they're may be an immune system issue with another child etc etc. I guess it's up to them where to,accept her. Hope it goes well

BeaWheesht · 12/04/2014 23:04

I think it counts, sorry.

twig what were the guidelines for your youngest? My kids are 7 and 3.5 and I wasn't aware the guidelines had changed inbetween them but I suppose I didn't actually check so am wondering!

ilovepowerhoop · 12/04/2014 23:08

dd is 10 and the guidelines changed the year she was born (2003) i.e. that you should wait until 6 months before weaning and to give no dairy, etc until 6 months either.

Twighlightsparkle · 13/04/2014 16:09

Hi Bea, my youngest was born in 2008 and the recommendation was to wait till 4 months then to wean and 6 months for dairy.

Now as far as I know it's 6 months to wean.

When I had my elsedt it was between 3-4 months.

ilovepowerhoop · 13/04/2014 17:26

the guidelines were not 4 months in 2008 as they changed to 6 months in 2003 and have remained at 6 months since then (I had one child in 2003 and one in 2006).

DS has the same problem ATM and while he's much better, the loose stools are still here and he is still going 4 or 5 times a day as opposed to once. I know from experience that it will take a few days to settle. It's not diarrhoea but his stomach is still very sensitive. I am pretty sure he isn't contagious but will be keeping him away from the world anyway until he's two days post poomageddon.

How are you op? Being ill while caring for the ill is awful. Hope you are both better soon.

I had dd in 2007 BTW. Guidelines had been 6 months for 4 years when she was born and 4-6 months for years before that.

Blankiefan · 13/04/2014 19:58

Thanks Rax - the nappies sound very similar. Lots of them (and still the occassional Vom too). She's clearly not going to nursery til at least mid week.

I'm better - thanks for asking. I had a horrible day yesterday but thankfully DH held the fort manfully. I was terrified that he's get it too. I felt so pathetic I could barely lift DD. Much better today.

I guess we'll have to wait and watch the nappies with obsession

Oh God, the nappies. It's like toxic waste. DH and I have started bargaining with everything we own over who will do the next noxious offering. You have my full sympathies. DS is 2 and fully trained but has no control atm due to the virus so we're back to nappies for a few days as it at least contains the hideousness.

Blankiefan · 13/04/2014 20:21

Poor you - that's possibly one silver lining we're not appreciating enough at the moment. As we haven't started weaning yet, we're only dealing with milky poo - not great but not hideous! Thank you for helping me to appreciate our poo!!
