8MO DS's poo, surely this isn't normal?

Sorry if this is a bit TMI but I'm quite worried about my 8MO DS.

He has porridge in the morning and a meal at night and milk feeds in between.

His poos are really hard and he seems to be struggling whilst doing one.

I was mid nappy change when I noticed that he was doing a poo and he looked to be really struggling, it's not just rabbit droppings. They are really large and he looks to be in quite a bit of pain as he struggles to do one.

Is this normal? It has been going on a few days but they haven't been as big or he hasn't looked in pain before, I'm worried about him and I have no idea whether it's something I need to go and get checked out or if there is something I can do to help.

DD had this. I gave her fruit in the morning first thing every day for a few days and then she was fine. It was Ella's Kitchen fruit in the squeezy tubes. Don't usually buy commercial baby food, but this seemed to help.

… also if it's really bad, can you get suppositories in the UK for babies with constipation?

I will definitely try giving him fruit around lunch time as he is yet to have three meals a day so this would probably be the best time to introduce that in his diet.

I'm glad your DD didn't suffer for too long, it's awful to see them in pain.

Shall I offer some water as well as milk? I'm not sure if that would help.

I don't know about the suppositories, I would imagine that you would have to see a doctor and get a prescription but that is only a guess.

Thank you for the advice, hopefully the fruit will help him like it did your DD.

Best advice for babies (if the fruit doesn't work) is lactulose - you're unlikely to get a script for suppositories unless you've tried other alternatives first.

Try giving him water; it's generally recommended that you start giving them a cup of water with their meals around this point to get them used to it.
