Threadworms! How to soothe the itch ?

DD has a really itchy bottom. I think I saw a threadworm when I looked with a torch. I have given her a bath in the hope it would soothe the itch. I have also given her a cold pack to hold against the outside of her knickers and, as a last resort, I have given her a dose of Piriton. She is getting really panicky and hysterical about it.

I will buy some Ovex as soon as possible tomorrow.

Is there anything else I can do to stop the itching?

My dd has had them a couple of times and I now put a really thick layer of sudocream or vaseline around her bottom just before she goes to bed and that seems to help as I don't think they can wriggle around so much.

bonjela will numb the bum. Give her a packet of babywipes to use when she feels itchy. It's the glue they use that causes the itch.. take it away and she should be able to sleep.

Or put as has been said some vaseline really thick just inside and around her bumhole.

Remember you all need to be treated and do a good damp dust and hoover tomorrow as well as boil washing bedding and knickers. An iron on gussets for extra killing of eggs is good. Although personally I just chucked and bought new underwear.

i swear I detest the damned things.. give me headlice any day.

I think the itch is caused by a secretion they leave behind so wash the area (I use damp cotton wool) to remove it and then put some sort of cream on to act as a barrier. I use sudocrem.

A nice big blob of cream, I should add, not just a thin layer.

Thank you everyone. DD has finally gone to sleep. I have put towels on to wash now, will do bedding and vacuum tomorrow.

DH is away working and DD2 is only 18 months, so too young to treat. I will Ovex for DD1 and me tomorrow.

Go to your doctor for the youngest. I've treated my babies younger than that.

gamerchick we have avoided headlice so far. Right now I would gladly accept lice instead of worms. I am seeing a really good nurse at my GP on Monday so I will ask her about DD2.
