Excessively thirstly 4yo dd

I'm worried about my dd who is just 4. She has some random symptoms. Spots around her mouth, complaining of sore mouth and tongue, but most worrying, she is very thirsty. This week, she has ran in every morning asking for a drink, has downed every beaker of juice and asked for more straight away. She's had about 7-8 beakers today and one of milk which is really unusual for her - I struggle to get her to drink usually. She seems ok in herself.
I had a thought about diabetes - are there any other symptoms I can look out for? Should I take her to gp? Thanks for any advice.

Take her to the the GP.

Thinking on, her nursery teacher told me she was following her around all day on Thursday and Friday, askibg for a drink.
I think I should take her to the gp.

Take her to the GP. It could be a urine infection or cystitis. She is the right age for diabetes tho.

Quinteszilla · 07/04/2014 20:54

juice? Sugary juice will not quench her thirst, it will most likely make her more thirsty. How about just water?

Loveleopardprint · 07/04/2014 20:54

Is she going to the toilet a lot too? When my friends daughter developed diabetes she was drinking a lot but also constantly going to the toilet. I really hope it isn't anything serious. I would go to the gp.

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 20:59

Yes she is going to the toilet much more too.
She's not too keen on water but will drink it at nursery. I only put a drop in to dilute.
I didn't really put it all together as she's not unwell.
I hope it is something like a uti.

As has been said, if she is going to the loo lots.
Also:
If she is tired
Weight loss
Very itchy

And possibly
Blurred vision and slow healing of cuts and wounds.

This is all from the Diabetes UK website.

Rootvegetables · 07/04/2014 21:05

You must take her to the GP or even out of hours, young children can get very poorly quickly with diabetes and excessive thirst is a main symptom. Hopefully it's something simple for you all.

Quinteszilla · 07/04/2014 21:06

If she had a UTI would not weeing hurt?

Twighlightsparkle · 07/04/2014 21:08

Not necessarily Quint.

I second out of hours too, take a wee sample hope all is ok

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 21:08

She is tired, she is very small for her age but doesn't seem to have lost weight (none to lose tbh) and she is itchy, but she has eczema and it is quite bad at the moment as the seasons change.
Thank you - I will have a good look at that website.

I would second the idea of the diabetes uk website. My dc was very thirsty and smelled of pear drops . . Amongst other things. Check the website ASAP.

paddyclampo · 07/04/2014 21:27

When I got diagnosed with type 1 as a kid I got very ill very quickly and because my GP missed the diagnosis I ended up with DKA. I think I was probably more thirsty than your DD, was extremely tired ie not capable of doing anything but lie on the couch and I lost loads of weight.

Does she wake up during the night for drinks? Do you know anyone who has type 1 who could give her a finger prick test?

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 21:37

I will take her to the gp. I know 8 beakers (McDonalds Lego cup, they're quite large) doesn't seem much but it is very unusual for her. We normally struggle to get her to drink at all.

Poor you Paddy. We had a similar problem getting my dc diagnosed. He was very poorly by the time we got him into the hospital.

Edenviolet · 07/04/2014 21:41

Please go to out of hours or a+e if you are worried tonight r gp straight away in morning and ask for a finger prick test to check blood sugar levels. Normal levels are approx4-7.
When my dd was diagnosed her bg was 25 at the GPS and three hours later at hospital it was 32.7, dd didnt have very obvious symptoms, had been drinking more but not excessively and we thought she had a uti.

Pleas get your dd checked just in case.

Edenviolet · 08/04/2014 22:17

Hope your dd is ok?

paddyclampo · 13/04/2014 23:06

Any news?

threepiecesuite · 14/04/2014 11:56

Sorry for the late reply.
I dud take her and it was a uti. Very relieved. Thank you for all advice.
