Eggs but no live lice?

Another combing session today. Last was Wednesday - no lice found but lots of eggs. Today the same, eggs aplenty but no lice. I am using the nitty gritty and conditioner and am something of a veteran at the headlice game. We have various infestations over previous 5 years! I do know what a louse looks like. My head was insanely itchy last night but no live ones on me either time Confused

what colour are the eggs? White ones are empty cases, brownish ones are eggs with lice in them

GiveTwoSheets · 05/04/2014 22:39

They fast little buggers best bet is to slab loads if conditioner on your head a comb through, your see if you have live ones.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/04/2014 22:53

the OP says she is using conditioner and a nitty gritty and has found no live lice

changeforthebetter · 05/04/2014 22:54

They are brown eggs which I have always taken as "live". I used 1/2 bottle of conditioner (and have done this (yawn) many times before). But where are the live feckers?? Confused

You could have only had one live one, laying eggs over a few days, and she has died. They have a high mortality rate apparently! Anyway, they take a week-10 days I think to hatch, hence eggs but no lice. Although, last time my dd had lice, the lice were so tiny (just hatched that day I imagine, there were only a few) that they were only visible through a magnifying glass, and only really clearly visible under the microscope. To the naked eye they were tiny dots, smaller than a full stop here. So get a magnifyer out and check the wiped off conditioner on white tissue.

yes you would need a male and female for mating but if the female was pregnant when she went onto another head then she could lay eggs there.

De-egging Tuesday night it is then Confused I was surprised not to find any actual crawlers (boak), as I am well acquainted with their appearance. I despise headlice and the hours I have given up to combing Angry

I think headlice are parthenogenic actually (females can reproduce without mating).

ilovepowerhoop · 06/04/2014 08:54

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_louse - says they need to mate to reproduce

BarbarianMum · 06/04/2014 08:58

You're right. Mixing them up w aphids.

hellymelly · 06/04/2014 18:07

They do need a mate, but can easily crawl from head to head once mated, and lay on another head. That is how most cases start, it only takes one louse to start an infestation.

ilovepowerhoop · 06/04/2014 18:51

I once only found one louse on dd's hair but never found any eggs or any other lice later on. I am guessing it was either a lone male or an unpregnant female who had no eggs to lay.

Hi im just wondering if anyone else as ever experienced the same thing?
A few times now I have found eggs in my daughters hair, always a little way down the hair and quite silvery in colour, so im assuming dead but never have I found anthing live, just a bit baffled as to why they wont live on her hair and ware they are all going? I always check the rest of the family and nothing.

If you’re itching they’re there believe me! They are v small to begin with - mine grew before we could see them. Yuk! I brush into a shoe box with a piece of white paper and if they are solid and have legs that’s them. Use the metal comb things to check and if you hear a nice crunch that is one! I found brushing up through the hot made it easier to see hem but was a bit sore for the kids! Good luck!
