Ultrasound of brain showed 'prominent' ventricles, possible hydrocephalus?

My 6mo ds has a very large head (48cm at 6 months) and was referred for an brain ultrasound to rule out hydrocephalus.

Had the scan this morning and sonographer said the ventricles did look prominent but that she thought they were probably within normal limits, but that she would send the measurements to the paediatrician, who would discuss it with me. I should have asked more questions but it was quite rushed.

Has anyone elses child presented with 'prominent' ventricles but gone on to be fine? I have to wait a whole month for the follow up with the paediatrician, which seems a very long time to be worried. My ds is alert and very happy otherwise and meeting milestones etc.

Ask aput an MRI which will be more detailed .
But if happy and healthy don't worry too much

DS2 has hydrocephalus. He was born prematurely at 30 weeks and had bleeds on the brain which led to a blockage of the CSF in the brain. His head grew rapidly from birth and he has very very large ventricles.

He had a VP shunt put in at 5 months and this drains the CSF into the stomach lining. Since then he has grown into his head size and is now 4.5.

DS2 wasn't alert - he was very sleepy and didn't move much. It was only after the shunt that he began to act like a typical baby.

Despite very large ventricles and a very difficult start in life, DS2 is walking, talking sunshine. He is a little bit behind physically and emotionally (more at the bottom end of typical) but that can be put down to prematurity rather than the hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus is a big deal to doctors - if they had any worries, your DS would be seeing a specialist now.

My dd2 was diagnosed with ventriculomegaly at our 20 week scan, the ventricals were 13mm and they like them to be below 10mm, throughout the pregnancy the levels reduced and we were eventually given the all clear. When dd2 was 3 weeks old they scanned her one last time "just to be doubly sure now that shes here" and found that she is missing her corpus collosum (the central part of the brain). I really dont mean to be alarmist but for us the enlarged ventricals were the warning shot across the bow so to speak, so I would press your consultant to check everything else aswell. Your DS meeting his milestones is a good sign Smile
