Has anyone ever used Colief for colic?

My dd is 8 weeks old and has all the classic signs of colic. The past few days she has cried constantly for a few hours in the evening and in the morning, and it just seems to be getting worse. Today she has screamed the house down from 8am until around 2pm Sad My DP's Aunty is a pharmacist and recommended trying Colief as she's had good feedback from others who have used it. I've done some research online and it has good reviews.

My DP has been to the pharmacy today to buy some, and the pharmacist behind the counter refused to sell it to him. It's an item which you can buy off the shelf, not even behind the counter, so I don't understand why! The guy behind the counter said it's for babies with a lactose intolerence, but surely if I baby is lactose intolerant, they wouldn't be on cows milk formula anyway so Colief wouldn't work (it works by breaking down the lactose enzymes in the milk or something along those lines). I find what he said very odd..

Has anyone else ever had a problem buying it? I could even order it online from Boots or amazon if I really wanted to. The pharmacy man said to see the GP and they will prescribe it, but I've read that not a lot of GP's will as it's expensive. I don't mind paying for it!

Has anyone else used it and would you recommend it? If so, I'll just buy some online from Boots.

No I totally forgot about that! Just read your post again now. Is it something I can buy over the counter or should I have asked the GP for it? We have just got over some issues with her not being able to go and don't want to go back to that as it was awful!

You can buy it over the counter, I can't remember the dosage but it is on the wrapper.

To avoid a chemist issue I would say the lactoluse is for yourself - I used to say i hadn't pooed for days usually got them moving quickly lol

when my dd went onto gaviscon the poo issue made things very bad, although she ended up having an operation linked to something else the gaviscon didn't help matters of poop.

Felix, my dd doesn't burp as I know it brings up the acid which hurts her, I don't know if others who have had reflux do this. I found gaviscon did not help a jot for reflux (don't use in comfort milk it gets too thick, my mum did this when my brother was a baby and it clogged the bottle up). I hope it works for you as I've found gps do not have a clue about babies and fobbed me off over everything. Eg ive waited over 12 weeks for an appointment with the pediatrician, finally got letter this morning the appointments in 2 months! She'll be getting weaned then (heard it gets better when on solids, she's 17 weeks now).
My GP does not prescribe anything stronger than gaviscon for babies, others on here have said only consultant gps can prescribe anything else but according to my gp they don't exist!

Sorry for the hijack and rant!!! I hope it all works out for u x

Tiny thank you for the advice Smile

Laura I'm sorry it's taken so long for them to do anything about it!! I can't believe you've had to wait 12 weeks and then another 2 months Shock

She's had two feeds with the gaviscon and she fed normally and seemed happy again! The comfort milk isn't thicker than normal formula, it's actually runnier and like the same consistency of breastmilk so it's fine with the gaviscon mixed in. The GP said give her one sachet but the leaflet inside the pack says 1 sachet for a baby under 10lb and 2 sachets for over 10lb. Dd is 11lb 13oz (had her weighed today). I've given her one sachet both times today and it seems to have worked, but you can only give them it 6 times a day so I can't give it her for every feed. I'm trying to feed her at the moment without the gaviscon and she's struggled to drink half the bottle and screamed throughout Confused as the leaflet says 2 sachets per feed for over 10lb, could I just use one sachet but put one in every feed do you think? She has about 8 bottles a day (sometimes less). Can I get away with doing that? She won't be getting any more dosage than it states on the leaflet, it would just be spread out over the day.

I meant to say to you earlier.

As she is on more bottles you need split a dosage.

Make sure she has a full sachet in the last bottles at night as you need her settled to sleep. Split one sachet over 2 feeds in the day

Laura when we first took dd into a&e at 2 weeks we were given medication and a peads appointment for 2 weeks time.

Have you tried a&e?

Has she been checked for tongue tie too? Have a read of the symptoms and see if any ring a bell Smile

Felix90 · 20/02/2014 13:31

Looking at that list, it's definitely a possibility. I didn't realise it would affect bottle feeding too. We actually struggled breastfeeding due to a lot of the things on that list but I went to see a bf consultant who said she couldn't see any signs of a tongue tie so I never followed it up. Who would I speak to about it? Would it be a GP?

Not sure. Yes a chat to the GP might be in order but I'm no expert. You need tiktok or mawbroon.

Think Milk Matters do a virtual diagnosis service though.

Felix90 · 20/02/2014 13:59

She's got her 6 week check (3 weeks late!) on Monday so I'll ask then Smile thank you for the suggestion, I never thought of that.

she seems a lot better with the gaviscon but definitely constipated! Had to give her a little massage to get it out this morning and it was really solid Hmm definitely going to get some of the lactoluse stuff today! Going to stick to one sachet as it's a bit thick with two and it took her an hour to drink 5oz earlier. It's annoying that curing one problem is just cresting another with the constipation!
