My 1 year old always has his tongue out, I spoke to the doctor about this and she said it was nothing to worry about but I can't help worrying! Everyone always comments on it and says stuff to him like get that tongue in put that away, they aren't sayin it to be nasty it's just that it gets to me as I'm already worried about it, he never just sits with his mouth closed while awake and it's not like he is sticking it out its like it's just hanging, he is a really good eater, good at eating all finger food and chewing, he can sit up crawl and walk, has anyone else's child done this and grown out of it? Should I go back to the doctor? I've looked it up the there's just so many different things on the net! Thank you

I would speak to the HV. She will either reassure or refer you . Of course you are worried ,you are his mum and your radar has to be sensitive! I am sure it's all ok but it won't hurt to check it out.

I did call her b4 I asked the doctor and she seemed to think it was just a faze and that he will grow out of it? She asked if he was reaching all other milestones which he is, But I just feel like its lasting to long and I can't help but worry I think I will go and speak to someone again I guess I'm just lookin for someone to tell me their child did this and grow out if it lol thank you xx

Dd2 was like this. I didn't think much until a nurse was concerned at a check up. She was seen by a paediatrician who did some blood tests (checking thyroid I think). All came back clear. She's 5 now, doesn't stick it out anymore, although it is unusually long.

Hello, was there anything wrong with your sons tongue? My daughter is 7 months and has stuck hers out since birth.

My 12 month old DS has been sticking his tongue out a lot since he was 8 months old. Especially when he’s in the bath. I don’t have a clue why he does it.

The same situation happened here to my nephew (3 months old). After he was born, the lactation consultant noticed that he wasn't latching on fully (the baby could do it fine, but it hurt him soo terrible). The doctor said it was because of a tongue tie and suggested consulting a tongue-tie specialist to take a look. Thankfully he referred a tongue-tie specialist from a well-known dental hospital. We went to that clinic, and they quickly deemed him a candidate for
tongue-tie surgery. They did surgery on that day itself, and I think it was pain-free because he barely cried. It was also quickly healed, so there's nothing to do afterward except massage it once in a while so it doesn't reattach. So it's better to see a tongue tie specialist if your little one still has eating problems - www.milltowndental.com/laser-dentistry/tongue-tie-laser-frenectomy/ - I hope that helps.

Ds3 did this. He had his tongue out all the time as a baby. I can’t remember when he stopped but he did. Interesting that another poster mentioned her dd’s long tongue as mine is also unusually long. I must check ds3’s.

Hello @Pink700 im just wondering if you could update me on your child now-I have similar concerns now and wondering if it’s just watch and see or start thinking about SALT/ ENT

Pink700 · 12/05/2022 09:34

Hi yes he doesn’t do it now. He’s now 9 and probably stopped it around 3. We did get referred to ent who reassured me all was ok.
