Nothing you can do to stop it. The bug has to work its way out of his system and vomiting is the way that happens. Lots of fluids, lots of rest and reassurance and it will pass.

I would get him a electrolyte powder.

CouthyMow · 03/02/2014 18:10

Get him to sip at diyoralyte. We currently have the D&V Kyrgyz here too...

CouthyMow · 03/02/2014 18:11

Avoid all dairy products, the bug thrives on that and lasts longer.

Just read your update. I know for toddlers the idea is to give a teaspoon of diary lye every now and again until they tolerate that.

Not sure what the advice is for 13.

You must completely starve him and not allow too much fluid.

Seems to have gone on a while, I'd be tempted if he's not keeping a teaspoon down to phone out of hours

I had something similar, if he can't keep even water down they can give you a anti nausea injection at a and e.

I hD one and slept for four hous on a trolley, in my pjs. It was that bad.

My DD (11) had gastroenteritis last summer and it lasted three weeks. I was really worried about her at one stage and took her to the GP he prescribed Gaviscon. I'm not sure if it had run its course anyway but it seemed to help her.

It is important that whatever is causing this comes out. So i would be reluctant to give anything that reduces diarrhoea. Main risk is dehydration, to avoid Dioralyte to be vomited it is important to give small amounts every 30 mins or so - best to call OOH as they can give you precise amount given your ds weight/age etc.

Elderberri · 03/02/2014 23:06

When I get to being sick even when nothing comes out I am in a cycle of retching, that needs to be broken if it goes on for a long time.

Agree you must cut out dairy. I don't get vomiting with bugs just diarrhoea, but even a cup of tea too soon can bring it back.

Sipping electrolytes slowly so he doesn't throw it up is good. But you need to wait a good while after vomiting then start sipping slowly, no gulps. Vomiting is worse than not drinking at all as you lose electrolytes from your stomach juices.

I also find sucking ice chips good for nausea.

Poor love, hope he's better soon.
