Private Dermatologist?

My 7mo DD looks awful... She has huge patches on her face of very sore, dry looking red marks and no amount of going to the gp and getting creams / cleaning her face with cooled boiled water etc is getting rid of it.

I want to just pay to take her to a dermatologist? Can you do this or do you have to be referred?

Nope, you can just find one local to you and phone up an make an appointment.

We did exactly that when the GP refused to treat our 4 month old DS's eczema as a baby. He was covered top to toe, so we researched dermatologists who did private work and made an appointment. He gave us a creaming regime of steroids and emollients and it was the best money we ever spent! His skin is lovely now with the occasional mild flare up.

After we saw him we went back to the GP and asked for an NHS referral. Which we got.

If you're in London I can recommend who we saw.

Also if you get a private prescription from them you can take it to your drs surgery and ask them to change it to an nhs prescription.

We saw Professor Harper at the Portland hospital. He also works at GOSH if you can get an NHS referral, although that will take a while.

Our NHS referral was to the Evelina (St Thomas'). We see the dermatology and allergy team there as DS has a cows milk protein intolerance which is the cause of his eczema.

I seem to remember being told that although its great to treat the eczema you have to find out what's causing it.

Dr John Hawk (Windsor) is excellent.
