EEG - what happens?

Ds1 has had problems with 'loudness' in his head thread here

We were seen incredibly quickly and he's now been referred for an ordinary EEG and a sleep EEG as temporal lobe epilepsy is something they feel may be the cause.

Ds is 12, all the posts I've seen refer to younger children. Can anyone give any ideas as to what we can expect?

Thanks!

Both my kids have had EEGs age 5

Not sleep ones though.

They just pop the electrodes on with some paste and then take readings, some were done closing eyes, opening.

Also try to get them to over breathe , this is to se if it induces absence type seizure I think.

The glue they use to stick the electrodes on, comes off easily with nail varnish remover

I had one as an adult - well, eighteen. Its pretty tiring. You have all these electrodes on your scalp and readings are taken. You have to do some deep breathing and they flash a light repeatedly into your eyes. I was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy.

I had one a couple of years ago, not a sleep one though. I don't think a 12 year old would find it frightening, nothing like an MRI.The people who did mine were very nice and chatty. The glue washed outwith shampoo. I had to blink quickly, breathe in and out like a deep sigh (this made me a bit dizzy which was normal) and look at a flashing light. They found nothing abnormal with mine (I had a sudden seizure whilst suffering with flu).
