10 day old baby still jaundiced

DS is 10 days old and he had jaundice from a couple of days old.
He's still quite yellow but he's a lot more awake now and he's feeding fine (on demand) and doing lots of wet and dirty nappies.
His poo is bright yellow.
We have to go see the paediatrician on Tuesday to check his jaundice. If he's still yellow will they send him in for treatment even if he's feeding okay and doing lots of dirty nappies?
If he had severe jaundice surely he would be difficult to wake?

Both mine were Oompa Loompas .

Feed, feed, feed, that's what clears it. Mine were tinged for at least a couple of weeks.

My second ds got it within 24 hours, loads of tests, but he had no light treatment .

All baby poo is yellow, korma yellow.

Go by your baby, is he alert, feeding well, nappy business good. Then just wait for it to clear and attend your appointment, it takes time.

If he seems unwell, then go in.

Welcome to motherhood. X

Btw, make sure you are drinking lots and lots.

It will depend on bilirubin levels when he is tested. DS was very orange. Consultant took one look and said she would bet any money he would need light treatment- his orange was down to his ankles. He was feeding fine, awake etc. His blood tests came back and the Bilirubin levels were too high. He was in a "Bili-bed " for 48 hrs before the level came down sufficiently.
Keep feeding lots and good luck!

All of the above, my first looked like Bart Simpson. Feed, feed, feed him & put him down to nap in daylight, even winter sunshine helps.
Good luck!

DD2 had to sleep in the window to help hers. She still has a yellowish skin, but that's just her (3 by the way)

You must get this checked out. It it probably just newborn jaundice that will settle but occasionally can be a sign of something else that needs to be checked out. Please give the midwife a call for advice today.

Slh122 · 01/02/2014 12:50

beautifulgirls the midwife told me they're going to check him on Tuesday. I think it's just protocol to check on day 14.

As Dusting has explained, what matters are bilirubin levels. They are checked through a blood test.

Has your son had one or more blood tests? If not and you feel he is still jaundiced then I would phone OOH for advice as untreated jaundice in some cases could result in serious and irreversible damage.

However, if he has had blood tests then you have to assume that the doctors consider his jaundice mild but want to keep monitoring him hence the check up on Tuesday. In that case keep feeding as much as possible and exposing him to daylight. If he doesn't seem right, lethargic or not feeding well, then obviously seek medical advice before Tuesday.

Hopefully it improves soon.

My dd was sent to hospital for a blood test at five weeks as she still looked yellow. The test was fine and it gradually faded!

FoodieToo · 01/02/2014 19:36

Some of mine were still yellow at 6 weeks or more. Took forever to fade.
None needed photo treatment and all are fine now.

wokeupwithasmile · 01/02/2014 20:23

Ok, I know this for sure, as mine also had jaundice. Smile

1- if you bf rather than ff it takes longer for it to clear.

2- the paed told us that it would take weeks for it to clear. Do not remember exactly how many but the fact that he is so little means that it most likely is nothing to worry about. So if you see/have seen even a little improvement that should be good news.

3- the paed told us to expose dc to the light/sun for a little every day to help.

Obviously Tuesday is behind the corner so you will get a professional opinion, but a little jaundice that does not get worse is not something that I would worry about.

DD1 was jaundiced for 8 weeks and looked like she'd been tango'ed Grin

They will keep checking and if you are feeding ok and DS weeing and pooing ok, im sure it will be fine. We did end up with a blood test in hospital at 8 weeks but no treatment

Good luck Smile

BeaWheesht · 03/02/2014 07:00

I'd call and double check with your midwife.

Ds was breastfed and jaundiced for 8 weeks. All fine.

Dd was mix fed and absolutely orange, hers started only a few hours after birth so they were worried, had blood tests and she very narrowly escaped light therapy. She was really really really orange.
