Month long chickenpox?

DS, age 3, had chickenpox just before he was two, literally hundreds of spots. Then just after christmas he came up with some spots, that looked a lot like chicken pox, only a dozen or so under one armpit. I took him to the doctors and they thought it looked like a mild case of chicken pox. Only two developed scabbed over and I thought he'd fought it off. The spots faded a bit but today another half dozen appeared. Half under the other armpit and half on his tummy.

Has anyone experienced this? DS seems fine in himself. Is it something other than chickenpox? Also he's due MMR on Thursday I assume if you've got a mystery rash then I should reschedule? Also could he still be contagious? I sent him back to Nursery after the holidays as I thought he was over it.

Google Mollascum contagiosum - look familiar?

Graciescotland · 26/01/2014 21:57

Nope the spots are flat, like chickenpox spots before the head develops.

Thanks for the reply though.

I'd pop him back to the doctors. It's perfectly possible to have CP more than once but usually if there's a lot of spots this first time they don't get it again. Having said that, the virus does remain in the body which is why you can get shingles if your immune system is depleted and something triggers it (more contact with CP I think). It possibly is CP but the doctor should be able to tell you so you know what to do about nursery.

Oh, and I would reschedule that MMR. A few more weeks wait for that will make sure DS is well for it.

it sounds more like shingles if the spots are localised in one area. DS had shingles at age 3 and a friend of dd's has had them about 7 times!

phoolani · 26/01/2014 22:04

Ds currently appears to be suffering the same thing. He too had an extreme case of CP when he was 3. His now looks very much like CP before they blister. It's almost certainly a viral rash of some kind, but honestly don't know whether it's CP or just something random. Debating whether to take him to the doctor tomorrow - they're all over his back and chest, a few on his face, but apart from a slight runny nose, he's clearly not suffering from it at all. Maybe it's just something else going round?

Graciescotland · 26/01/2014 22:05

Thanks I was thinking that, DS has a had a bit of a virus, temperature, cough which he's just gotten over post chickenpox so perhaps just run down which is why it's popping up again. I did have a look at shingles but it doesn't look the same. It's just individual chickenpox spots. If a nyone has experienced the same thing I'd still like to hear it though!

Sorry my last reply was to homebird (slow typer). That's exactly what they look like phoolani. I wouldn't normally worry but the appearance of more spots a month later, it just seems like it's dragging on forever.

There's no harm in taking him to the doctor if you're worried. The problem is it's unlikely they'll be able to tell you much and won't be able to give you anything to treat it anyway! Are you dosing him with piriton - helps if they're itchy.

Graciescotland · 26/01/2014 22:17

He's not itchy at all. Hasn't seemed to notice them. I spotted them in the bath this evening. We tried not to make a big deal of the spots at christmas as he was feeling fine. DH took him to the doctors under the guise of taking himself.

I will make him another appointment though.

shingles is chicken pox like spots though and when ds had them they were localised under his arm too

Graciescotland · 26/01/2014 22:31

I did have a look at them powerhoop but the rash looked different supposed to be more bandlike? Did your DS find it painful? Also do you find that they keep coming back when your DS gets run down?

Might be worth checking with the GP Gracie to decide what to do about nursery.
