Anyone in the same situation? My husband us really worried that there's something seriously wrong. We have been to doctors a few times and been given anti-biotics. She has also been given a blue inhaler now to try and help. The antibiotics haven't really helped and I'm not sure the inhaler is doing much. The cough is worse at night but she is also coughing during the day. Can anyone offer some advice please? Thank you

My 18mo has had a cough since September when he started nursery. Doc have given him the same treatment as your dc. He seems happy but I think he's just picking up bug after bug so it's not getting time to clear.

That's what I think too but DH is getting in a right old state and it's making me worry now in case I'm being too blasé about it!

Did the GP show you how to use the inhaler effectively? Did they give you a volumatic or a spacer to use?

If so, put the mask over the nose and mouth, do 1 puff of the ventolin, hold the mask on the face for 10 seconds, take the mask off the face, take the ventolin out, shake and repeat

How many puffs are you giving?

ElleOhElle · 24/01/2014 19:08

Yes, she has the spacer. She is having two puffs and takes it well, quite happy to hold it there. The allergy nurse told me I can use it up to 10. Puffs in 10 minutes if needed. She's just had 4 puffs in about 10 minutes and has stopped coughing for now.

How is her breathing? Are the muscles in her throat or under her ribs pulling when she breathes! Is she very tired or short of breath? Can you hear a wheeze or crackle in her chest? I would perhaps try more of the inhalers but if she is regularly requiring lots of puffs she needs to see the doctor again.

Neither the doctor or allergy nurse can hear any wheezing. She doesn't seem to have problems breathing - she does have very large tonsils (always) I don't know if that could be a factor. She has a crackly chest again, it had gone to just a dry cough but it's sounding congested again. We are seeing a paediatric dr tmw so hopefully they might be able to put our minds at rest - thank you

Fwiw asthma often presents as 'just' a cough, especially in children. Ds is 7, confirmed asthmatic and has never wheezed but during an attack coughs constantly. Even I was hospitalised a few weeks ago with my asthma, no wheeze though. So don't believe it if they tell you it's not asthma because there's no wheeze.

On the other hand both my dc have coughed almost continually since about October with viruses I presume as they never seem to come to anything.
