I was wondering if anyone has any helpful advice, dd 9 has been diagnosed with abdominal migraines, from what I have read these last from 1-72 hours, this is now day 4 Hmm I am giving her calpol and she has been given pizotofen to try at nights, she is getting these bouts of pain and I feel powerless. I had her back at the gp today and he gave her ranitidine also. Has anyone any experiences?

Sorry no intention to frighten you but this happened to a friend with her 12 year old. It went on for weeks then either turned into an appendicitis or was just appendix in the first place.
Anyway he had appendix out and was fine.

Same as kitchensink

Notsoblonde · 23/01/2014 19:16

Am pretty sure it's not appendicitis, no other symptoms, thanks for your replies :)

Food intolerance maybe ?

Also Notso google "gastritis"
This is an inflamed stomach lining with many causes. I know a child who had this the cause was never discovered but was controlled through exclusion diet.
Sorry that's probably not much help

I was diagnosed with this as a child, probably about the same age as your dd. I used to take some horrible stuff called neutrodonna, don't know if you can still get it, or if it is available over the counter. I have no recollection of whether it helped or not. I did eventually grow out of it. Not much help really. Hugs to your dd, it is really very very very painful.

bigoldbird · 23/01/2014 20:28

Just googled it, it is actually neutradonna and appears to be an antacid preparation. Looks like you can't really get it now.

My DD suffers from these, there really is nothing I can do except let her rest, she tends to be sick and can't stand light, sore head and neck, and especially swollen round the belly button area. She's often fine the next day, but then sick again the next evening. She's been hospitalised twice as she's rocking in agony, but it tends to ease off the next day. Massive sympathies here x

Thanks to all who have replied even if you think you are no help, you really are, it's awful to feel so helpless, am hoping she will be better soon and free of pain. If it carries on I think I will push for referral and bloods etc.

Has she seen gastroenterologist ? It sounds miserable for her. Maybe need to see one ASAP even if to rule out something specific . Poor thing

Sorry to hear about your daughter, hopefully you can get some further advice soon to help support her.

On the point of appendicitis, my daughter's tummy hurt all over when she had hers, but it was even more painful when pressure was put on the tummy area between her tummy button and side/top of hip bone. I actually put a thermometer on the inside of her legs and it was higher on her right hand side which got me alarmed. Everyone has different symptons but she was sick and it was like a dark green gel, so just something to be aware of.

DS1 suffers from them and sometimes the effects would linger on for several days.

Have you managed to identify any triggers, or do they seem to be pretty random?

curlew · 24/01/2014 10:28

My ds has these. I was very sceptical because it sounds like a bonkers sort of diagnosis, but hey ho. His only last at the most an hour or so. The doctor says that they often happen to children in a migraine prone family, and usually develop into headache type migraine in adolescence.
The advice i got, which seems to help, is to give an iboprufen type painkiller as soon as possible- my usual "wait a bit and see if it gets better" approach was very unhelpful. Now he's 12, he carries a neurophen in his pocket at all times, and more often than not, it stops them before they start.

I have tried food diaries and all sorts to try to find a trigger, but there don't seem to be any.

Happy to answer any questions if I can!
