Upper lip tie

I'd appreciate some advice from anyone whose DC have had upper lip ties - and if they'd treatment for it.

DD had posterior tongue tie which was snipped at two weeks. Problem solved and she was able to bf without issue.

She's now nearly two and I've realised that she seems to have an upper lip tie - very fleshy gum at the front and a gap between her front teeth.

I think that I had it when I was younger but my mum is a bit vague about what was done with it.

I still have a gap between my front teeth and needed a brace through my teenage years. I'd like to avoid DD having to have the same, if it's possible to get the lip tie sorted now.

As far as I know it's not affecting her speech but it's hard to tell when she's still so young.

So...does anyone know anything about lip tie? Health visitor I asked had never heard of it!

TIA

Hi, I'm sorry I don't have any advice or ideas to help, but my dd2 was diagnosed with this by the dentist last week, and he said if it was sorted then her front teeth could move together?

So I will watch your thread with interest as I was just about to post the same thread myself. Hopefully someone with some experience will come along Smile

There is a closed group on fb called Tongue tie babies support group. They might be a useful source of knowledge.

Thank you. Will check out the FB page. IncogKNEEto is your Dd older or younger than mine? Mine is two. Just wondering how traumatic and painful the removal would be. ..

The tongue tie separation was ok because she was so tiny but I can't imagine putting her through that now!

My DD is 6 Sad can't believe I never noticed before, am going to make an appointment with one of our local GPs who is an ENT specialist, hopefully he'll know what can be done.

Found an old thread on here from 2011, but that seemed to say it would need surgery under GA Sad poor soul dd2 has already had one GA to remove a cyst, and she was younger then, I don't think she'll be terribly happy about having it treated either way.

My 19month old has a pretty strong ult, but I have consulted an NHS dentist and a lactation consultant (who happens to be our HV!) and both have said that it is very difficult to get it treated in the UK, unless you go private - think there are a few practitioners in the UK who will laser ult, one in London at least? We can't afford to go private anyway, and have been assured that if DD doesn't smash it open herself one day, then they may consider cutting it once her adult teeth come in, if they have a massive gap. Otherwise she will just be left with it.

My Ds had this, as well as a tongue tie, and the gp said they don't treat upper lip ties as generally at some point in their childhood, the child bangs their face and severs it themself. And Ds did, jumping on the bed when he was 3. He still has the gap in his teeth, but his sister has that too, and no lip tie, so it may just be genetic.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm thinking that I must have torn my own upper lip tie as a child which is why mine has gone but my mum had no recollection of treatment!

I'm worrying slightly less now but will have a chat with the dentist when we next go.

Thanks all!
