Temp in 2.5 year old

Hi there - ds had v high temperature yesterday- peaked at 39.3 degrees. Lots of drinks, Some cal pol, sponging down and tepid bath seemed to bring it down. He slept well through the night and woke up in much better form. Temp went down to 37.4 today - however since tea time now the temp seems to be rising again. He's never been sick before so I'm not sure when/if to bring him to doctor. He's just lying in the couch whimpering ... My head is hot...

At what point do I worry about temp?

Give him a cool bath and some more calpol and monitor how it goes. If calpol doesn't do anything then out of hours doctor. If he's still ill tomorrow then doctors but it may just be a viral infection.

Don't let him have too many layers on even if he says he's cold.

I'd call the out of hours doctor and get some advice, especially as he's been poorly for a while. Hope he's better soon.

I have always found ibuprofen better at bringing down atemp (calprofen) and you can alternate with paracetamol if needed to keep temp down. But if that doesn't work, try out if hours

I find DD's temperature always rises in the evening when she's unwell and that children's ibuprofen is more effective to bring her temperature down.

I got told last time by ambulance responders (Dd prone to febrile seizures) to put a room temperature flannel on her head and strip her off but not to put in a cold bath as that would be too much of a shock and may bring on a febrile seizure (as it's the speed a temperature rises at).

Hope he's feeling better soon.

Thanks a million for all the helpful responses everyone. Think I'll just watch him closely for next couple of hrs - calpol and a yoghurt seem to have helped in past hour - it's all very up and down though :(

I'll get the ibuprofen next time to see if it's more effective.

Nurofen for children is quite good as well.

Hope he perks up soon Smile
