Eyes, glasses, advice needed please

Hi,

DS has just been prescribed glasses -0.75 in both eyes following numerous tests at the opticians. The optician went back and forth about whether to give him glasses or not (his concentration isn't the best and got bored easily during the test)

He says that the glasses make things look really large and a bit blurry so now I'm worried his prescription is wrong and will be doing more damage than good to his eyes.

Incidentally I just asked him to stand 4m away from the TV to read the synopsis on a TV programme written in tiny white text, which he could do with relative ease and he could read a car number plate at 20+ metres. I'm just not convinced that he has a problem with long distance vision.

If anyone has any experience or advice, I'd be really grateful to hear from you.

sounds like he is very mildly short sighted which may be why the optician wasnt sure whether to give the glasses. What age is he?

He's just turned 5. Really confused as I've never noticed him struggling to see objects near or far. No squint. She ruled out a lazy eye. Gave him drops to look inside his eye and he outperformed in the 2nd test. Then prescribed glasses with a weak prescription after a 3rd check up. Think I'm going to have to take him back. Thanks very much for your reply =)

At five and that prescription I wouldn't fuss. I'd wait six months to a year and try again.

DD2 wore her first pair, but forever lost her second (she was 6-7) she'd smiled and nodded a lot in the opticians and I don't think they were ever right.

Next ones she never took off!

Ok. Thanks Star. I just don't want to do the wrong thing.I don't want to make his eyes worse by forcing him to wear them and on the flip side, I want to help him if he is struggling to see! Thanks for your reply =)

If they are for straight short sight (not a squint or a lazy eye) wearing or not wearing them makes no odds as long as he can see the board at school. Have a quiet word with his teacher.

Unfortunately if it is standard short sight it tends to get worse with age. DD used to forget her glasses for school until she found she need her glasses to watch TV with breakfast.

Now like mine they are always in the end of her nose.

He's never complained that he can't see, near objects or far objects. He reads books close up and text far away too. He sees things in the distance before I do (& I know my vision is very good) Thanks for your advice, I think I'm going to leave it a bit and book another appointment =)

If he's not having problems leave the glasses off and have him checked again in 6 months.

Thanks Eye. That's what I think I'll do.
