Possible scarlatina?

Daughter is 5. Thursday morning she looked a little peaky so asked the teacher to keep an eye and call me if it looked like she wasn't coping. She had no temperature at this point but did have a scratchy throat.

Lunchtime Thursday got a call from the school asking me to pick her up, which I did, still no temp.

Put her to bed where she slept for 2hrs and when she woke had a temp of 39.3, was complaining of a sore throat. Calpol and her temp went down a degree. Early bed, didn't want supper but drank lots of water.

Next morning temp at 39.3, complaining of stomach ache, headache and sore throat. Obviously kept her home and was her slave.

This morning, fever entirely gone but still a sore throat. At her bath this evening I noticed a slight red rash on her neck, more red in creases. Her skin has a funny texture but is not red. Her tongue is bright red but that maybe due to some strawberry jelly she had earlier in the day though she does say it feels bumpy and she has a white strip running back to center.

Will see how she feels tomorrow morning but am concerned that if it is Scarlatina she should have antibiotics even if she feels perfectly well.

Anyone had any experience?

My DD had Scarlatina about 8 years ago. about the same age as yours. the symptons were exactly the same including the bright red tongue. Unfortunately as it was so long ago I can't remember what the Dr prescribed for it sorry but one thing I do remember was the skin on the palm of her hands and the soles of her feet started peeling...weird!!

My DS wasn't given antibiotics for Scarletina - just Paracetamol and a few days off school.

If her temp is under control with Calpol and there are no significant worrying other symptoms, it's probably best to let her ride it out.

If it is Scarletina, be ready for peeling skin on fingers and toes in a week or two. That freaked me out a bit but is a common side effect.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

Thanks, have just called NHS direct to chat about it, they're getting CAMDOC to call me back. My daughter only ever gets ill on weekends, I'm beginning to know the out of hours docs really well.

Ds1 had scarletina at 5 and ds2 3had full blown scarlet fever, apparently both are forms of the same bacteria. I just had the throat infection. We were all given antibiotics. Oddly enough it was with CAMDoC when we were in central London.
They did swab ds2's throat as at the time it was a notify able condition.

DS1 had this when he was about 4yo. He was quite ill with it, but it didn't last long.

Then I caught it, despite having had scarlet fever as a kid. OMG it was awful! Hope she is better soon
