Try cotton wool with tepid water and wipe gently from the corner out. Very gently. Use one cotton pad for each eye. Also pure cammomile boiled and then strained and cooled is good to use.

Boob milk squirted in the eye may help too...

A bit of breastmilk on cotton wool works. Honest it does. Lots of anti bacterial qualities in it. If the water doesn't work, try it. Sticky eye quite normal at this stage.

Its probably just a blocked tear duct - very common in newborn babies.

Take a cotton wool ball, dip it in cooled boiled water and squeeze it gently into the corner of her eye, then wipe very gently and dispose of it. Do it a few times with a new ball each time til the gunk is washed away.

You might find it happens intermittently for a week or two until her tear ducts are mature.

Are you breastfeeding? Sounds weird but my midwife recommended a little bit of breast milk dropped in the corners, it clears it really well.

Otherwise cooled, boiled water on cotton wool dabbed gently is fine and should clean them. This is common in newborns and nothing to worry about, but if you are worried or the discharge looks a funny colour then talk to your midwife or health visitor, they will get these sort of questions all the time and will be happy to set your mind at rest.

Congratulations on your baby!

Yep, breastmilk works a treat Grin

Pascha · 10/01/2014 15:21

and yes, breastmilk does work too Grin

My DS had this when he was born. With daily cleaning like the other posters have suggested, it cleared up within 3-4 weeks.

ChilliQueen · 10/01/2014 18:25

My step-sister had this in both eyes quite badly... nothing cleared it up, until she went on holiday and spent ages on a beach... apparently the salt water in the sea made it all better.

Mrswellyboot · 10/01/2014 18:29

Our boy had this. My gp said a lot of babies have it. She showed me how to clear the year duct. With your baby finger gently massage under the corner if the eye and it will release the yellow stuff .

Also cotton wool and cooled boiled water. Seperate ones for each eye.

Definitely not an A&E situation Smile
We used a small amount of previously boiled water, cooled (obviously) and then dipped cotton wool in. Just do one wipe across with each blob of cotton wool, don't re-use them.
