DS (4y/o) ampit temp 38.9, what to do?

Ds woke cranky and a bit feverish today. Went back to sleep till noon. He has been irritable all day refusing to have any calpol, complaining of feeling cold but refusing a jumper and went to bed at 6.30 (very early for him he usually takes till 9pm to start properly sleeping). I just got in from work and looked in on him and he is flushed with an armpit temp of 38.9. I suspect it's likely a virus as he said he had a sore throat this morning. I'm worried about leaving him but also don't relish waking him, what should I do? Is the temp at a level where I should? Thanks.

Same as my four yr old Ds three days ago. I phoned 111 and got an appt at out of hrs. Took him in and discovered it was tonsillitis. Maybe ring and get some advice...he was better in two days...

You need to get some calpol into him, then recheck his temp half an hour or so later.

If he doesn't seem in pain and if the temperture doesn't rise too much I would wait and see. I would check him every few hours during the night though.

Nhs website says no need to seek medical advice unless it's 39 or above with medication so get calpol or calprofen in him and reduce his clothing but nt so much he shivers.

Calprofen tends to act faster - around twenty mins. Calpol can take up to an hour to take effect.

It's the body's defence mechanism to fight illnesses.

Cal pol to lower the temp. Monitor for the next 24 hours.

Thank you everyone, he's woken up now and had a big drink so I feel a bit happier, still won't take the medicine tho. Have tried cajoling, bribery etc. will keep a close eye.
