2.5 yo playing with his "dinky" retracted foreskin

Today my DS who is 3 in April came running up to me to show me his penis. He had managed to roll the foreskin back and it wouldn't to back to normal. I gave a little squeak out of shock and had to get him to wee to put it back. This is the first time I've seen his foreskin retract, I've always read that you should leave it alone...
is he too young for it to be retracting? The tip looked sore and red afterwards, I've put him in a bath and dabbed a bit of sudocrem on. He's not complaining but I'm still concerned there could be damage.

TIA xx

This often happens and means that the adhesions between foreskin and glans have broken down as intended at any time between birth and puberty. This is why you were told to leave it alone and let it happen naturally.

Baby boys often love to play with their penises and some discover the novelty of retraction. They don't hurt themselves and would stop it before they did, which is why they should be the ones to facilitate this process. There shouldn't be any damage resulting from your son's 'experiment'.

The only thing you have to consider is that you now need to encourage him to retract daily. Because the adhesions have now gone there is nothing to 'seal' the penis and prevent ingress of foreign matter;dust, clothes fluff, etc which, together with dead skin cells and skin secretions could incubate infections in that warm moist foreskin cavity.

You need to help him rinse while retracted with clean, not soapy, water and perhaps learn to pee with his foreskin pulled back which will help direct his aim. Always return the foreskin back to its original position when voiding is complete. Failure to continue regular retraction and keep this area of the penis clean, can result in the need to circumcise.
