BCG... London on cusp of epidemic... Should I vaccinate my DS

Am I over reacting...
DH and I were obviously vaccinated as teenagers. My 2 youngest 8 and3 were vaccinated. However DS 10 was not offered a vaccine as an infant and so has not had it.
I just want all my children to have the same cover.
Shall I take him privately?

go and speak to your gp first

Not meaning to comment on your age but would a vaccine you had as teenagers still be effective now.

Stickhasgrownup · 07/01/2014 20:25

Frontdoorstep - Yes. You only have the BCG once and it covers you for life. In fact the younger you have it the better it works... hence why it is now given to babies. I also read that if you have it over 35 its unlikely to work...strange one!
Think will talk to gp. Its just impossible to get appointments then they are always running an hour late! Was hoping a gp on here would pop up and advise!
Thanks for input.

yes.

Stickhasgrownup, I'd be really surprised if it lasts for life, that is if it was even effective in the first place, efficacy will be no where near 100%, so I think it's a fair bet that many people who had it as teenagers will not be immune 20 or 30 years later. I do take your point about it working less well in adults.

Information on here suggests that 75% of cases are where the persons country of origin is not the UK and infection is usually from prolonged contact with someone who has the disease.

If there is an epidemic won't the GP do it (or the hospitals chest or TB clinic)?
