Hi, really hoping someone out there can advice or offer further info- I noticed a large (8cm by 10cm) light brown patch of skin on my 3 month old ds side I have been upset as presumed this was a birthmark ?? Cafe au lait mark - been to gp who is referring us to paeds as unsure what is/ possible implications of it!!
Foolishly have googled it & ?? Mcune-Albright syndrome?? He is meeting all his milestones & is so smiley & cheerful! However I am now an anxious mess!

Don't know sorry, don't worry it's normal to feel that worried. Hugs.

My DD2 has one on her hand. Every medic she saw for years asked if there were any more. I think they check all so they pick up on the small minority for whom it is an indicator of something more severe. She has been checked out and is fine.

Try not to worry as chance as it is nothing to worry about Smile

Cafe au lait marks can be indicative of all sorts of things - and also of nothing in particular.

Googling will result in deep paranoia. Try not to!

The paed will do general developmental checks, and make sure everything is fine. If by the smallest chance there is a 'reason' or suspicion of other involvement, they will likely just monitor development if he is progressing normally.

I have two - one faded. Dd2 has some. Try not to worry! Xx

Thanks everyone it's
Just the sheer size of it definitely
only has the one that I can see at the min! Trouble is I feel this worry could go on for a lot of years with him still only being 4 months old!

I have one on my wrist. dn firmly believes I spilled coffee on it and it stained me.
Try not to worry.

Also have small ones on my stomach, forehead and fanjo Blush

Do try not to worry about it, they can be the sign of something serious or it can just be a birth mark.

I think you would know though if it was more serious. My son is covered in them, his one leg is brown with white marbled through it. He has NF (due to the volume they don't know if it's 1 or 2) and it's always been quite obvious that things aren't right with him. Just try to take this as reassurance tests and nothing more.

Vatta · 07/01/2014 01:14

Hi, the vast (VAST!) majority of cafe au lait marks are just birthmarks, random pigmentation that don't mean anything.

Doctors do some checks now, to catch the tiny proportion of children where birthmarks do indicate something else, but really try not to worry at this stage.

Booville3 · 07/01/2014 07:21

Yes you're all right I will try to stop worrying & stop furiously checking him for further marks! In every other way he seems a normal 4 month old baby (apart from he likes to feed from me all night little devil)! I also think if they were that worried they would want him seen sooner not in 3 or 4 months! Thanks everyone for the comments x
