Anyone given their kids probiotics? (Esp biokult)

Have given DD probiotics before with no issues but have recently started her on very small dose of biokult.

(She has allergies, glue ear)

Even a tiny dose is causing her diarrohea.

Anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure if it means the probiotics are doing their job and I should persevere or try another brand!

Not used that one.

My DS1 has a sensitive digestive tract and he has a powder from optibac. He had one from Holland and Barrett for a couple of months but the tummy aches came back. So back to optibac.

Different ones have different things in them. It can be trial and error.

Watch out for dairy if that's causes issues with your child as its in a few.

Thanks pancake.

We have just taken her off dairy cos of her ear issues so will watch that.

Will try the optibac - do you give one for kids? Do you feel it helps? Thanks

Eek - just seen the price of the optibac.

Do you give a full sachet a day? (Looks like a fiver for ten sachets)

Optibac powder (they have different types) is for children, does have a tiny dairy trace in it so my DS2 doesn't have it (dairy-free - he has one from Holland and Barrett). Google them, they have people on phones to talk to about their products are are helpful.

It helps my DS1. He was having tummy aches every other night. Doctors not sure why, but I think he's a sensitive tummy. After a tummy bug takes weeks for his tummy to settle, when he uses this there's a noticeable decrease in tummy aches. In fact touch wood not one at all over Christmas which is when it usually strikes him badly (Christmas fayre).

Sorry rabbiting on.

Higher nature do a dairy free one that's powder and can go in drinks.

I do. I know..... I know. But it works for him... And to have him not sobbing for 3hrs a night, it's worth it.

Higher nature is cheaper.

Early indications from recent trial comparing probiotics wit six weeks oat porridge for breakfast found that oat porridge provides the right climate for good bacteria in the gut in a more effective and consistent way than probiotics. Maybe worth considering?

Pancakeflipper · 02/01/2014 22:02

Interesting. My DS1 has porridge oats at least 5 times a week. He loves proper porridge - perhaps his body tells him he needs/wants it?

Who knows? it seems a very healthy option.

It was broadcast a few months ago on BBC, I think that the program was called 'Doctors' or something like that.

They found that it takes six weeks of daily porridge to get right level of good bacteria in gut after having taken course of antibiotics.

We usually buy pro bio mints from Higher Nature also available on amazon. That way they eat the whole mint without wasting the product unlike powder dissolved in water. Onken biopot is very good as it contains friendly bacteria but my children will not eat yogurt.
