Speech delay- should I be overly concerned about DS 2 yrs 3months

My DS (2years, 3 months old) speaks a maximum of 10 words. He has been referred for a speech and language assessment, and everything else (hearing, behaviour, reactions etc) is completely normal. The whole referral process has already taken 3 months and there is a waiting list for the appointment. Will speech therapy help? Is it just a question of time? My GP has made me more anxious by saying that if it is not addressed now it can be difficult to catch up and there can be big gaps in development. Please let me know if you have had any similar experiences? Thanks

ds2 is 3 yrs 1 month (a twin with twin sister and older sister). Preschool are concerned that he has some speech delay and think it may be linked to his sometimes particularly 'willful' behaviour (frustration, they think) and also they are concerned about his hearing. I on the other hand must admit to being completely unconcerned until this was all brought to my attention Hmm I had just put it all down to him being a boy with two sisters speaking for him (particularly twin sister). Although his behaviour makes him a handful I don't find it too much out of the ordinary ( think mainly attention seeking as much better with individual attention). Also my dd1 does have hearing problems which require grommets now and compared to her I find ds's 'lack of hearing' to be selective.
He is being assessed soon- pending a possible referral so we shall see, and I may be eating my words, but from what you have said I would not think you have too much to worry about and it is probably just time.
Am pretty sure ds was not really saying 10 recognisable words at that age!!
Good luck
