What to feed an ill child?

Hi there,

My 13mo DS was in hospital last night and diagnosed with bronchiolitis and tonsillitis. He's a poor wee soul, his temp is really high and he has basically slept on me all day. Hopefully the medication will help.

I'm looking for advice on what to feed a sick baby. He's only had a yoghurt and a fruit pouch today, which is something I suppose.

I'm so worried about him, he's just not himself.

Try anything and everything, if he's struggling to eat then at this point anything is better than nothing?
Hope he gets better soon :(

Suspect the main thing is to make sure a sick small child has drinks so does not dehydrate.

IHatePopUpTents · 31/12/2013 13:35

Just spitballing, maybe a smooth soup in a sippy cup? It might be comforting to have the 'bottle' and you know he's getting some nutrition? :/

Fluid is more important than food-just keep offering little drinks. He'll show you wen he's ready for food again. Poor thing- hope he's better soon.

MigGril · 31/12/2013 13:40

fluids are more important right now, what ever he fancies eating and with tonsillitis anything soft and soothing. like yoghurt and fruit pouches sound ideal. asIif you have ever had it its really hard to swallow, so sick with soft foods till he's feeling a bit better.

starofbethlehemfishmummy · 31/12/2013 13:40

I would just let him have what he fancies when he fancies it. And lots of drinks

duchesse · 31/12/2013 13:40

Anything he'll eat, the poor sausage! When mine were sick at this age I mainly fed them sweet things to keep their energy levels up.

If he'll eat the fruit pouches, just keep em coming. Ice cream?

Fluids are very important. If he'll drink nothing but juice, that's fine for a few days.

If you can get him to eat chicken soup, so much the better.

duchesse · 31/12/2013 13:41

PS: Hope he's feeling better soon. Children can go downhill very quickly, but they also get better very quickly.

KnottedAnchorChief · 31/12/2013 13:58

Mine like Heinz tomato soup when they are off their food. Just warm, sometimes with bread soldiers to dip or just from a cup. It's v smooth and straight from a tin so quick to produce if they feel in the mood and doesn't require effort to make or eat. I don't think it's too unhealthy either.

Anything he fancies.

DD2 was in hospital at 13 months with pneumonia and ate nothing. I just kept offering drinks.

Offer chocolate, chocolate pudding, chips, ice cream, pizza. Anything he would normally enjoy.

ExcuseTypos · 31/12/2013 14:36

My dd used to get tonsillitis a lot. She didn't feel like anything for a few days, so I just kept the fluids going.

Once he does like something, try things like an ice lolly, ice cream, potatoe, plain rice, anything that easily slips down his throat.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

BrownEyedGirl32 · 31/12/2013 19:46

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. He had a wee pot of custard for his dinner. Fluids not going very well but will persevere. Don't want to end up in hospital! This virus is horrible.

Thanks again x

Jelly is a good way of getting liquid into poorly children or maybe tinned fruit ice lollies, custard and yogurt is great. Try some more interesting cups, he might be interested in a straw for long enough to drink something. You poor things.

curlew · 31/12/2013 19:59

Very very cold drinks might be nice for him. Or ice lollies?
