8 year old DS1 has a number of allergies (severe allergy to pollen, both grass and trees, plus other as yet undefined triggers - basically year round "hayfever"))

He is on daily adult dose anti-histamines, plus Piriton for attacks. He is also on seretide (max dose for age and size,) Singulair, Avamys nasal spray and 4 puffs of ventolin a day.

He is STILL coughing.

He's never had an actual "attack," although he has been ambulanced to hospital with allergic reactions, but his sleep is disturbed, he's struggling with physical activity and he is constantly knackered.

The doctor moved him on to the seretide 2.5 weeks ago, and there's been a slight improvement, but not much.

He's been referred for allergy testing but there is a 6 month waiting list. I'm considering an exclusion diet. We have no pets, hard floors and a good hoover (I'm also asthmatic, but well controlled at long last having ditched wheat and sugar from my diet!)

Has anyone BTDT with this level of asthma? It is not severe, because he's not having actual attacks, but it is really affecting his/ our quality of life. Any suggestions WRT meds/ diet ideas would be very welcome.

Is he seen by a consultant? If not I would push for that.

It took about 3 weeks for the seretide to kick in properly with DS, and again when his dose was changed it took a week or 2 to see a difference - so perhaps it just needs time.

What antihistamine is he on? Perhaps he needs a different one. DS has had quite a few before we found the one that helps.

That said, with DS we are still having a battle to get his drugs right (he is just 4) but every change seems to get us a bit closer!

My Ds is 8too. His asthma is viral-induced rather than allergy-related which I'm very grateful for. He's been on a Symbicort Turboinhaler for a year or so and it's changed our lives. It's fantastic, we no longer have to plan around the possibility he'll have an attack when he's ill. It's A preventer-2puffs morning and evening-and I don't think it's offered to young children often but it's been great for us.
