Cough-how long can it last?

It is possible that I'm being a bit pfb, so please forgive me if that's the case. DS is 11mo and has had a cold with a really nasty sounding cough for over 5 weeks now. I took him to GP 3 weeks ago, was told that even though it sounds very chesty, chest is clear and they get all sorts of colds when they start nursery. He is fine and happy otherwise, no fever (just blocked nose), eating/drinking fine. Cough gets better on some days, worse on others. Should I take him back to GP at some point again or just wait till it goes away? TIA

My bubs had a persistent cough too- he was diagnosed with possible asthma (although I am not convinced) but they have given him an inhaler for night time. It does help when his cough is bad. I think he actually just has allergies as the best thing has been giving him antihistamine liquid which has helped clear it up. Good luck, coughs are persistent lil buggers xx

Thank you for your reply. He's not stopped coughing since he went to bed at 6:30. He is still sleeping but I just can't listen to it any more Sad

we had this for dd1 when she was 9mo last christmas time. was treated with a blue inhalor morning and night. we used it during the winter and not the summer and this year so far only at night.

she is still too young to diagnose for asthma I think so they are just treating the symptoms.

btw I totally sympathise, it is heart wrenching to hear them cough.

Oh dear. I'm starting to plan a visit at sick kids.. GP is useless, I sometimes think they're getting paid to finish the appointment asap.

The coughing is hideous, I totally sympathise! I forgot to say we also got a humidifier which helped too.

Bloody GPs, I have a great one but when you get a bad one it is awful. Go back, demand to be taken seriously and if not, ask for a second opinion. Get your HV on side too. I agree inhalers tend to be used for the symptoms rather than the diagnosis so it may be helpful to have that considered. Good luck xxx
