so last October i had to take my son to the Dr for an audiology referral whilst there he found the lump behind my sons ear, its been there since Easter he then checked him all over and found more enlarged lymph nodes, he called the one behind his ear abnormal, anyway the Dr ordered blood tests which came back fine and he said end of story, well a month later we had an appointment with the peadiatric consultant come through. we had no idea why so my husband rang the department and the woman on the phone said she couldn't release any information on patients but that we were to make sure we came to the appointment and could we please not rearrange, my husband pressed her further until she told him not to worry but our son needs to be monitored by specialists. what the hell does that even mean?? the next day we had a letter from our gp surgery with a copy of the appointment letter and that also stated not to rearrange, so i rang them and the receptionist told me that our gp wrote to them asking for advice and that the consultant arranged the appointment as he was unwilling to discuss it through correspondence. wth does that mean??! his appointment is in a couple of days, they gave him their first cancellation but not an emergency appointment, his appt is only 6 weeks from the consultant replying to my gp, the usual waiting list is 18 weeks.
Im so scared of going, in the last 4 weeks this lump has tripled in size and my boy has a 2-3 hour nap almost everyday, he hardly eats. what if there's something awfully wrong with him? i just want to know if anyone else has experienced this and its been a false alarm? sorry for my rubbish typing, spelling and grammar x

This must be all very worrying for you. I'm sorry I have no experience of the exact problem you are worrying about but have had plenty of times when I have convinced myself that something is seriously wrong and has turned out not to be. I think it's reassuring that the blood tests were fine and I would have thought that if they thought it was something very serious they would have seen him quicker than 6 weeks. Try to distract yourself over the next few days. Let us know how you get on at the appt.

I totally understand your anxiety, and can really identify with you. However, it is a very good sign that the bloods were normal. I also agree that if the consultant was seriously concerned, you would be seen sooner than in six weeks. Glands can come up for all sorts of reasons. Even a scratch on the head can bring up the glands on the scalp. Please do let us know how you get on.

I'd be petrified too but hold onto if it was really urgent they would, have seen him sooner. How,old,is ds. ?

princesspiss · 29/12/2013 11:13

he's 4, I honestly think hes fine, I mean I'd know if he wasn't right? I Am severely passed off with their people skills though, it seems to me that all they can really want to see him for is to prod his lumps a bit and send him home? If that's all they want why wouldn't they just say so! so much unnecessary stress! I know they can't ignore long term enlarged lymphs because of lymphoma but surely if the bloods are fine there's no reason to worry us like this??

but also they can't be thinking lymphoma as they would have had to see him within 2 weeks.

It must be very stressful for you and your DH. However, to me it seems that the GP and consultant are being conscientious and surely that must be a goog thing.

Enlarged glands can have many causes, and most are not serious. However, sometimes the cause can be serious and a full blood count may not always come back positive straight away hence the need to monitor.
