No Calpol - Help!

My 15 month old has a temperature of 38.8 and I have run out of Calpol. Can I give her a quarter of a crushed tablet in jam instead? We worked out that is how much is in one dose of calpol. Please help! Thanks!

No don't do that, you can't be certain of the strength as it may not break evenly. Can you get out to a supermarket or get someone to pop out for you. Is there a neighbour with young kids who could give you some? You don't have to treat the fever though if she is not doing too badly with it. If you are worried or just not sure give NHS 111 a call.

No - the dose of patacetamol won't be even so more than 1/4 of the dose may be in 1/4 of the pill.

You say we? Can't one of you go and get some? Or do you have childrens ibuprofen?
Hope your little one'a ok.

If no late night stores open then try a friend or neighbour. Is she feverish ?

Rummikub · 28/12/2013 20:10

Use a cool damp flannel or give bath to bring temp down. I wouldn't give calpol for that temp, as long as she is ok.

LovesBaublingTheTreeAgain · 28/12/2013 20:12

I wouldn't, any neighbours with kids?

LovesBaublingTheTreeAgain · 28/12/2013 20:13

Shouldn't put them in tge bath, strip off and cold flannel

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 28/12/2013 20:13

You don't need to give calpol if she's not miserable or in pain. Have you got nurofen?

Strip her off, keep up the fluids. Tepid sponging isn't recommended as it fools the body into thinking its cooling down so it compensates by making the temperature higher.

The recommendation now is to only give calpol if the child is unhappy or in pain and leave the temperature to fight the infection.

curlew · 28/12/2013 20:15

Just keep her cool. You only need calpol if she is in pain- there's no need to bring a temperature down unless it goes silly-high. It just shows that th body is dealing with an infection.

Don't let her get cold, but keep her cool.

Thiscoukdbeme · 28/12/2013 20:17

A cool bath isn't recommended any more as it can actually make the temperature go up higher after the initial plummet.

Most health professionals agree that paracetamol or ibuprofen are best for a temperature.

NorbertDentressangle · 28/12/2013 20:20

Pop round to a neighbour who is likely to have some - they won't mind as anyone with children will know how worrying it is when they're unwell.

I've certainly helped out a neighbour in this way before and didn't mind at all

Rummikub · 28/12/2013 20:21

Oh I thought that had changed to only give meds if temp over a certain level? And to use other means to bring temp down?

Rummikub · 28/12/2013 20:24

How's your little one doing op?

lilyaldrin · 28/12/2013 20:32

You don't need to give calpol just for a temperature. Is she in pain? Can you just keep her/the room cool?

0FrillyKnickers0 · 28/12/2013 23:00

Hi. Thanks for the advice. I nipped out and got some Calpol and DH stayed in. She has been waking screaming and has been miserable since 6.30. Gave her a dose of calpol an hour ago or more and she is sleeping fitfully. I'm sure it is related to her molars (has 3) but I still worry! She is in a short sleeved vest and a baby grow but nothing else.
