Honey for a cough?

wifey6 · 26/12/2013 08:46

DS1 (3) has had a cough for nearly a week now - recovering from a viral infection.
Does honey help coughs?
I'm thinking of diluting it down with warm water.
Any thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you

Yes - a teaspoon in a little warm water or mint/camomile tea if he will try it. Cough syrup just doesn't work.

Thank you nicename
I agree about the cough syrups not working. I prefer alternative methods if possible.
He has just happily had a spoonful of honey! Shock
He keeps having coughing fits that upset him which I think are bought on by our central heating being on. Is that possible?

Hi I used to have the central heating on for my dd when she had a viral cough and I didn't realise I was killing her with kindness Shock it is scared when they have them coughing fits isn't it?

I got told by the hospital that the room actually needed a bit of moisture to help with the cough symptoms. I boiled a kettle a few times in her room before she went to bed and this actually helped. Also prop him up as high as you can on pillows. Good luck op

Apparently chocolate is good for coughs.

addicted...I never knew that about the room needing moisture - I will try the kettle idea tonight - thank you!
bun...I'm sure my DS will be happy to oblige!
He hasn't coughed nearly as much since I gave him the honey! Fingers crossed!

We do:

Manuka honey - on spoon

Camomile tea - can add honey also if they prefer

Steamy rooms - take them in the shower with you or run shower hot with shower door open if sealed shower and sit them on your lap on toilet so they can breathe in easier ( can give the tea at same time or pop them in bath at same time)

I second the moisture in the room, my lo is the same with viral coughs. What's helped us a lot especially at nighttime is putting a ceramic humidifier on the radiator, beats the expensive ones and does the same job Grin

Oh and milk/ milky things can make phelm produce more so although it seems soothing I would try and limit milk/ yogurts etc for a day or two until it gets better

nicename · 26/12/2013 10:53

We put a bowl of water on the radiators to keep moisture levels up. You could try steam inhalation but this is tricky with little ones!

DS used to wolf down manuka when he was little - more sniffy about it these days though! He is barking like a seal right now, poor kid. This cough can last for weeks, the doctor told me! Herbal tea is a great thing for small children to get into. We get the Pukka 3 mint, which is lovely.

You are all wonderful - thank you!
