Constipation in 2yr old

When does it go beyond just treating with lactulose?

We have had problems since she turned 1 but today she has been very distressed - straining and just passing diarrhoea. She has had 3 days of lactulose but still seems to be struggling to pass. This is the second time in a few months that it has been this bad. Resolved with a massive hard poo last time.

I'm worried about long term problems - physical and psychological and being fobbed off at the doctors.

Can anyone advise please.

When my daughter was very constipated lactalose and syrup of figs weren't working

We went to see a consultant and he said just pour the stuff down her throat and don't pay any attention to the recommended dose

Two days later she had what can only be described as a poo explosion and has been pretty much fine since (10years)

I would suggest going to your doctor and seeing what he advises, it's a horrible thing to go through....for both of you

Both my children have and will suffer with constipation (as does my dad). My dad received lots of medication as a child to keep him regular and he now struggles regularly with stomach pains caused by an oversensitive stomach, I am therefore loath to use lactulose, despite knowing how effective it is.

I find that a small glass of watered down fresh orange juice with breakfast is welcomed by the boys aged 5 and 3, furthermore it keeps the constipation at bay!

Been to doctors today and been prescribed suppositories. They only had the infant dose rather than the toddler dose so am keeping my fingers crossed for a midnight poo explosion

Only joking, hope you get your explosion

2nd trip to doctors and now on movicol. Wish they would make their minds up. It's been distressing for all of us but it seem to be starting to shift now.

Dd1 (4) has issues on and off. Some things which help:
Lots of prunes/figs etc (she will eat half a packet Shock )
Juice to drink, the obsession with teeth/ony giving los water doesn't help imo. If they do tend towards constipation you need to balance...... Fruit juice, ribena.
Avoiding too much milk

Its awful, we're having some probs at the moment. She screamed this morning tmmy hurting, even though the poo looks fine and she seems regular Confused

Hi I had same problems with dd at that age. She is now almost 6 and has constipation very rarely now. She was on movicol lactulose etc I tried prunes, any dried fruit to which nothing helped.
What did help was warm weetabix every morning without fail and lots of water.

Thanks for your replies. The movicol has done the trick so I'm going to start scaling it back and try and up her fibre and fluid intake.
