How to get rid of Molluscum Contagiosum

I have never felt compelled to write on a forum but feel the need to help anyone who has a child with Molluscum Contagiosum! We have been battling it for 2 years, started with one spot at 6 months old and rapidly turned into 100+. We have spent a fortune on seeing dermatologists, lotions and potions, homeopathy, the great big long list of natural cures, importing products from the US etc. You name it, we tried it. Eventually got really fed up about 2 months ago and whipped off a few of the spots with my nail just before bathtime. My son didn't even really notice so did a few each night before his for about a week. The spots I picked healed very quickly to nothing and then the rest started to follow suit on their own. Now he is completely spot free. My other son is 9 months old and I noticed 3 spots on him 4 weeks ago, I picked them immediately and so far, fingers crossed, no more spots! (While the spots were healing I continued to follow the usual Molluscum rules: use towel once, clean clothes/clean pj's every day.)
Clearly I am not a Doctor and this is the opp of what most medical professionals say but it works and it makes sense, the bodies immune system won't fight the spots if you leave them alone because they're doing no harm.
I hope this helps somebody, I really wish I had picked them off straight away and saved lots of money and stress!!

*meant to write 'before his bath'
Has to be pre-bath as the tiny bit of blood from each spot needs to be properly rinsed (the actual white spot just needs to go in a tissue, sorry gross I know!)

My dermatologist removed them from my DD like you described (well, not with her nail, with some kind of curette). There isn't any other treatment is there? You either just leave it to work its way out if the system of its own accord or you get them taken off. I've done the latter because my DD is at preschool all day with 17 other children and it's contagious.

Hi
We ended up doing this w 5yo dd - a large one got accidentally knocked off, and healed so brilliantly, we took more direct action w the rest. The lotions and potions seemed to do nothing. When i noticed them appearing on ds's legs we also removed them, and they haven't reappeared.

The natural history of MC is that it clears up spontaneously after 18-24 months.

When DD's MC cleared over a couple of weeks, I thought something I had done had made a difference. But that was probably just because the MC was about to get better on its own anyway.

Still, it's a big relief when it goes.

I'm not sure about the accuracy of 18-24 mths. My friends daughter had it for over 4 years and I got rid of my second sons almost instantly! Waiting around for it to go is definitely not the answer!
