Help - 2.5 yo given MMR booster too early

my husband took my 2.5 year old to the GP today for a flu jab and was told that he needed his second MMR booster even though I thought he wouldn't need one till the pre-school one they give. My husband allowed him to have the jab but now I'm really worried that he's had it too soon and it will be too big a dose for a small boy. He seems fine but obviously I'm concerned, and a bit cross with husband and GP. We're calling NHS direct and I will take it up with the GP in the morning but can anyone put my mind at rest in the meantime?
Thanks so much.

He'll be fine. AFAIK the biggest problem might be that the spacing is wrong, so you might want to get his immunity checked when he is older.

Thank you!

It is fine. If there is a measles outbreak boosters may also be given early.

GinnelsandWhippets · 21/12/2013 00:24

It's fine. In my area the MMR booster is routinely given at around 18 months as there is a high incidence of measles + mumps.

I was told you could have jabs a month apart!

It's fine. The pre-school labelling is for admin reasons, not health ones. My DSs both had their booster at 18 months.

It's fine, the 2 doses can be given as close as 3months apart. My youngest had her 1st at about 20months (delayed because she was too ill to have it on time), second one about 6m later, as we were going to Asia & GP advised the extra cover.

In Germany, where I live, they give the first dose at around 13 months and the second from four weeks (!) after that. I spaced them out more for mine as I felt it was better, but it's not going to cause any problems. See it as something that's out of the way now :)

(PS the second MMR is not technically a 'booster' - it's to catch those for whom the immunity doesn't take the first time round, as it didn't for my dc1 for the mumps part (we found out via a blood test). There is debate about how well MMR immunity, particularly for mumps, lasts into adulthood, so as I have sons I will probably be looking to get them done again in their teenage years)

Thanks everyone. Really helpful and reassuring x
