I would call OOH. And have done. They never bother about me calling for a fever that doesn't react to anti pyretics.

AnyFuckerWillDo · 20/12/2013 21:38

She's asking for strawberries and ice cream Wink but still 39.4

How old is she?
I would call nhs direct to start with but take her straight to walk in if you're worried

Winterbluessummersoonish · 20/12/2013 21:43

With 40+ temp and not responding to medicine I would a and e or ooh

But that's me and you did as wwyd

You are the best judge and need to check if pulse/breathing rate is fast, additional symptoms? And also if drinking? Going to loo etc?

Age is important? And any prior conditions?

My DS1 hallucinates with a temp and it often points to acute tonsillitis had it many times. If Ds2 had 40+ temp he would be very poorly and it would probably be affecting his heart rate and breathing rate so for both mine I would unapologetically go to A and E.

Winterbluessummersoonish · 20/12/2013 21:44

Ask, I meant sorry for typos!

Anyway what I meant to say at the end is trust your gut, you know her and don't feel bad for using medical services.

AnyFuckerWillDo · 20/12/2013 21:47

Mmmmm I'm a nurse (you loose all professional skills / knowledge with your own) but just scouting for opinions, she's 38.5 now and on second bowl of cold strawberries watching lion king 1 1/2 (no lions though?) gonna keep an eye on her.

If it is coming down and no other symptoms I.e fast breathing then I would watch and wait and give medicine 4hrly overnight - would also just give a quick scan for rash/other symptoms but if you are happy then reassess tomorrow, but if your gut thinks she is not right just phone ooh or children's a and e -

BeaWheesht · 20/12/2013 21:55

Well I'd ring NHS because if it was dd it'd be highly unusual and if it was ds I could bet on it being an ear infection.

However it's come down 2 degrees almost which is great so I'd say you're ok to watch and wait.

redcaryellowcar · 20/12/2013 21:57

our ds has 'uncontrollable' high temperatures when he has urine infections, calpol and nurofen don't seem to touch it, luckily we know this now so push for them to test his urine, but when i called 111 recently they didn't ask about previous medical history nor did their questions lead to seeing anyone despite me being fairly certain what the problem was. luckily call handler put me on to great nurse who said of course with his history we should see ooh doctor!

lougle · 20/12/2013 22:21

DD3 is on day 4 of this. 40.5c at her hottest, Ann's only slightly reducing with paracetamol and ibuprofen together. I took her to A&E on advice of 111 on Wednesday night, but they weren't interested. I took her to the GP this morning and she says it's gastroenteritis. It's only the last 24 hours that she's developed diarrhoea, though. until then she didn't seem to have any specific symptoms.

AnyFuckerWillDo · 20/12/2013 22:54

Totally lougle because of work I know A&E probably wouldn't give a shit about a non specific temp n couldn't imagine anything worse than being stuck there for 4 hours with a tired hot toddler. Think she's ok but will keep a close eye tonight xx

Actually (ex nurse here) I thought once they'd ruled out appendix, ears and throat, they might have been a bit concerned about a 40c temp with no obvious cause in an obviously ill child (pale, dehydrated, sunken dark rings under eyes), but it seems not.

I was even less impressed when I took her to the GP 36 hours after A&E, having been told throat was fine, and the GP said 'her throat is really very sore- I think that's where the virus started'. also, A&E said abdomen fine, everything fine. GP said glands up in abdomen and throat.

I know things can change but as she'd already been 40c for 2 days when we took her, I suspect she had at least some of those features at A&E.

Hawkmoth · 21/12/2013 09:55

How is she today?

My DD also gets a temperature before you can tell what the illness is. DS on the other hand can be quite poorly without being feverish at all... Like now. He has tonsillitis and bronchitis and never felt any warmer than usual.

DD is also a very slow metaboliser of the medicines, so I do worry.

lougle · 21/12/2013 11:38

Yes, how's she doing AF?

DD3 is still hovering at 39.5-40c and had more diarrhoea today. Day 5 of fever, day 3 of diarrhoea. We're meant to be having a Christmas visit to DH's Brother and SIL, with his other brother who lives a couple of hours away tomorrow, but our niece has just finished cancer treatment and DD3 is still actively infectious, so she can't go Sad

AnyFuckerWillDo · 21/12/2013 22:19

Still got today and up and down in mood, poor baba. Pretty sure it's a UTI, she used the potty this aft and wee very cloudy, smelly and very yellow Hmm
