Just Impetigo or something else as well?

DS (20months) has impetigo, there has been an outbreak at nursery and it was confirmed by the gp on Wednesday.

We've been given cream (fucidin?) to apply 4x a day an have been given oral antibiotics to administer if the rash hasn't improved after 5 days.

I'm a little concerned because I thought impetigo was clusters of rash, but what started as just patches on his face, nappy area and behind his knees looks much worse, and he now has blotchy skin over his whole body. The blotches do blanch, so I'm not overly worried, and he seems his usual chirpy self, with no temp.

Would the blotchy skin mean something else, or is it just a side effect of the impetigo?

My son got patches of impetigo all over though it had started round his mouth. If it were me I would start the antibiotics, though of course that's not what your doctor said. If it's the same antibiotic my DS had then I'll warn you now tastes vile!

Thanks, I think I will start with the abs. He hates medicine, so it will be an ordeal if it tastes foul as well!

I called nhs direct who weren't worried and said to take him to the walk in centre tomorrow, so that's a relief, they usually say straight to A&E!

I would either start the antibiotics straight away or phone OOH for opinion. Out. Of control impetigo is dangerous as it can cause bloodpoisoning.

Thanks love, we're on our way to the walk in centre now. It looks much better but I'd rather still go, just incase.

How is your DS OP?

PeazlyPops · 23/12/2013 10:06

He's right as rain now, thanks hebburn.

The nurse at the walk in centre said he has hand, foot and mouth, that's what caused the rash as its viral. We started the anti bs for the impetigo, and it's all pretty much cleared up.
