What to feed a constipated toddler

DD hasn't poo'd for 6 days now. We've given OJ, lactulose and I'm just about to get some prune juice. But what about meals? Any suggestions for what to feed her?

if she's not uncomfortable I wouldn't do anything tbh.
could be all that christmas chocolate that bungs her up.

if she' not happy I think I would still wait a day, as you have already given remedies.

I would maybe take her to the gp as they could prescribe something else to help e.g. something like movicol

I always give mine the Ella's kitchen purée pouch that has prunes in it.

My ds was constipated last week (hadn't been in a week) ended up having to use a suppository :( Do you have a minor ailments service at your pharmacy? They can prescribe these. I made him eat pears and grapes for days afterwards till things went back to normal. Rewarding him with ice lollies when he went.

Hmm. She's normally a 3 times-a-day girl, so this is unusual. She's very grumpy and uncomfortable with it too.

I'll try the pouches, although she's never liked purees. Was trying to find prune juice but I could water the pouch down, that might work.

Will take another trip to the pharmacy if nothing happens today. THanks!

We find apple juice quite effective.

SilasGreenback · 19/12/2013 15:17

Dried apricots are good if she likes them. And lots of water.

Hoorah! There is poo! Rather pale and mucousy (sorry, tmi) but at least she didn't scream the house down this time. Prunes and fruit juice on standby for next time:)

From your description of what's come out it sounds like overflow which is the bits that have worked their way round the impacted poo. You still need to give her foods that will bring the proper poo out, the darker the poo the older it is so you need to look out for that coming out.
avoid bananas and rice. Apricots grapes, mango and kiwis all work for my ds who has severe constipation due to a medical issue

Thanks Pudsey. We've kept the lactulose up and given lots of fruit and she has had 3 massive poos today, so looks like she's getting back to normal.
