tooth abscess in child

DD has an abscess in her tooth. She had had it for a while. Saw dentist who gave her ABs and the earliest appt she could be given to have tooth removed was January. Abscess disappeared, but returned last week, not as bad. DH spoke to dental surgery, they could see her until this friday. It appears to have been kept at bay somehow since then.

Today, it is red, swollen with a big white head. She says her jaw hurts, and is complaining of a stiff shoulder (don't know if that's just coincidence, or if it's linked, it's the same side). I have given her calpol and calprofen. She is v unhappy as it's swollen and uncomfortable although not in huge pain.

Should I call OOH doc for ABs, wait to see emergency dentist tomorrow, bearing in mind they were not bothered last week and I might not be seen until the evening if I can fight for a slot, maybe not until Friday even?

i would see emergency dentist tomorrow. kick up a stink!

i read from a dentist on here before that a tooth CAN be treated/extracted even if there is an abcess.... so keep this bumped and hopefully someone trained can advise

bunda I am going to kick up a stink. It's the bloody dentist's fault this happened in the first place. But that's a whole other story.

Same thing happened to my daughter they gave her antibiotics for an abscess which went away then came back even worse . They ended up it taking it out and she still had the abscess didnt wait until it disappeared .

If they don't see you at the surgery phone the dental line at nhs 24 and they will see you
Hope it gets sorted x

lala oh good, so if we do get her seen tomorrow they might just take it out? I would prefer that, as it's worrying me, worried it might cause some more serious damage to her jaw bone or something leaving it so long.

She had experienced horrendous tooth pain, about 3-4 days following a checkup at dentist. We took her back and he said a chip of a filling that she had several years ago had come out and that a nerve was exposed. Her gum was red, but he said no infection, just filled it again, said it would hurt for a couple of days, keep an eye. She was in agony for almost a week, called and receptionist said this was usual, didn't see need to see her again. Then the pain stopped and within 2 days of pain stopping she had red swelling and a white pus lump. Receptionist said it was fine, as it was visible and so meant it was draining, then said 'do you still want her to be seen?'; of course i did! next day was earliest then. That is when she got the ABs, and sent away.

I am certain she had the infection when he filled it. I am certain that the filling was dislodged at her dental checkup, as she had no problems before that appt. The dentist said it was coincidence. Maybe. I suspect not, as that horrendous tooth pain bothered me a lot, before we even saw the dentist about the pain.
