Knee pain in 7 year old, worried its something serious

Hi all
Have spent all day at A and E with Ds1 (7) as he could hardly walk for pain in his kneecap. He complains of it on and off, every few mins or so. It's not a problem with putting weight on just certain movements. He has hypermobility. The doctors did an X ray which was fine and said they would do blood tests on Fri if no better. They couldnt really say it was anything which has worried me. Ive read about joint pain being linked with serious illnesses I know thats pathetic but cant help it. I have an imflammatory arthritis but they say hes too young for that.
Can anyone put my mind at rest please? x

DD had pain in the knee joint. Wailing type of pain. Worse at night, but getting worse in the day too. Turns out she had something called Osgood–Schlatter disease. Also known as knobby knees. Basically she's growing, she's active, it's going to hurt a while, get on with it.

Obviously, my DD's diagnosis has absolutely nothing to do with your DS's. But I was only trying to lighten you up, not all joint pains are sinister.

Hope you DS gets better soon.

Knee pain is quite common with hypermobility, particularly if the feet over-pronate. Does your DS wear supportive shoes or inserts?

We took DS1 to A&E at the same age, with precisely the same pains - he'd been wearing wellies for most of the day before. We buy him crocs wellies, now, as they support his feet and ankles a lot better.

Thanks both.
I wonder if its linked to growing too?
He does wear inserts and I make sure he always has them whatever footwear he has otherwise he gets pain at night. Does your DS have hypermobility? Do you have regular appts? We only see the physio whenever he has grown out of his inserts but they dont give him any exercises x

Also with my son his pain from hypermobility is generally at night and since we've had the inserts in his shoes that's been lots better. But every now and then he gets pain during the day that affects his walking. In May we were at A and E with hip pain and then yesterday with knee pain. I worry that joint pain is a sign of something serious (think I read it someone once) he's still asleep and nervous about him when he wakes incase it's bad again. X

So having had no pain weds, Thursday, Fri it's back tonight in his thigh and knee. He looked like he over stretched and has been hurting ever since. Worse with movement. I'm guessing it's his hypermobility? X

ds has diagnosed hypermobility - with hind sight I can now see I did but it improved with age.
I used to have a lot of A&E visits for knee and ankle pain - mostly due to rolling over on my ankles at play time, it would hurt for a couple of days but I would over compensate with my other joints so would get additional pain in them, I had a lot of tubey grips (like these) that I would use during the day at school, the pressure helped and seemed to support the joint. I can remember being told never to wear them at night, I also had to have proper footwear all the time - no bare feet at home or black pumps for PE.
I've followed the same for ds (7). He's had a little physio but we've been told the best things are bike riding, swimming and trampolining
If he's having regular pain then def worth taking him back to have inserts looked at - there are different hardnesses, maybe he needs something different? or has grown?
ds also sits on a cushion in school and has the option to sit on a chair at carpet and assembly time if his hips hurt (sitting on a hard floor can really hurt his joints and doesn't rest them)
Could it be growing pains? Epsom salt baths help ds too
Not sure what else to suggest but if you are worried then worth following up x

Has he had a cold recently? DD1 had a few incidences where she had writhing pain in her knees, but the doctors said it was referred pain from her hip and she had transient synovitis - the synovial fluid causes swelling and pain due to the cold.

He hasn't had a cold but I know what u mean by that. Do you know if there's a link with hypermobility and headaches? X
