Impetigo help

DS has been sent home from nursery with suspected impetigo. DR has said that one spot looks like it so now he has to stay off Angry Can I take DS out with it or are we quarantined? Seeing as I have to be off work I thought I might do the shopping or take him to see the coca cola truck.

NHS website:

As impetigo is a highly contagious condition, it is very important to take hygiene precautions to stop the infection spreading to other people.
The advice below will help to prevent the spread of infection.
Keep children off nursery, playgroup or school until their sores have dried up, blistered or crusted over or until 48 hours after starting treatment.
Don't share flannels, sheets or towels with infected people, and wash them at a high temperature after use.
Wash the sores with soap and water, and cover them loosely with a gauze bandage or clothing.
Don't touch the sores.
Wash your hands frequently, particularly after touching infected skin.
Avoid contact with newborn babies until the risk of contagion has passed (when the rash has crusted over, or after at least 48 hours of treatment with antibiotics).
Washable toys should also be washed. Wipe non-washable soft toys thoroughly with a cloth that has been wrung out in detergent and warm water and allowed to dry completely.
Treat suspected or confirmed cases quickly.
Cover cuts and grazes with a plaster or dressing.
To prevent the impetigo returning, keep cuts and scratches clean, and ensure that any condition that causes broken skin, such as eczema, is treated promptly.

Don't see why you are angry BTW ....

MummyV18 · 09/12/2013 20:13

Oh not angry just wasn't a better fitting face Smile more miffed as its typical its my work days and its only 1 spot and from the images I've seen online it looks nothing like it but have to stay off for the best.

That's why I was wondering if we could go out.

Have you been to gp of it is impetigo it won't clear up without treatment. If it's mild probably need fucidin cream.

MummyV18 · 09/12/2013 20:18

Yeah been to docs got that exact cream and put it on today Smile

Given the NHS advice, he will be able to go back once he has had 48 hours of treatment. It is very very contagious, so everybody in the household has to be careful or might end up getting it as well.

It can be treated very well, but if treatment does not show marked improvement do contact GP as it is the same bacteria which can cause blood poisoning if not kept under control.

Hopefully your DS recovers swiftly and no-one else in your household gets it.

If it's on his face then I wouldn't take him out till 48 hours into treatment. If it's on a part of the body covered by clothing, then I would
